Haggis with Tatties and Neeps
I ate at The Scottish Arms restaraunt on Sarah St. today with my son. I've always wanted to hit this joint.
We started off with a Cesar Salad and Scotch Eggs which is hard boiled eggs with some type of sausage crust. They were quite tasty.
I ordered Aberdeen Haggis with Tatties and Neeps for my dinner.
Haggis is an old recipe more than likely pre-dating written history. It's traditionally the heart, lungs, kidney, and liver of a lamb chopped and spiced then stuffed into a casing which is usually the stomach, The Scottish Arms leaves out the lungs and do not encase it. The Neeps are rutabagas with a whiskey sauce and the tatties are plain ole' mashed potatoes. The Haggis definately had a unique flavor I have never experienced before, it's hard to explain what it tasted like. It did have a bit of an liver taste to it, but it wasn't as strong as Liverwurst or Braunschweiger. It was very good food and the atmosphere was dark and had that old world feel. I will return.
I was introduced to haggis in Scotland years ago at a wee pub in a town named Dollar. LOVED IT. If you haven't been to Scotland and get a chance –– GO!!
Sorry, but that looks disgusting.
That haggis looks a little wet. My mother in law makes hers and it comes out much dryer, but then she boils it in the casing.
We clean the grocery store out of Rutabagas every time and the checker always has to look it up to see what it is.
My wife's from Shetland. For as gross as it sounds Haggis is QUITE TASTY!! But if you've eaten much german food (blood sausage, or BraunSchweiger) it's pretty much all the same. I've been known to "smuggle" some frozen haggis back in some wool socks when we go visit the Fam during Winter. I think the next deer I get I'm going to try making some.

Never eaten haggis, although it is on my list of foods to try. That does look good, perhaps one of these days I will be in stl and I will try to find that place.
My favourite dish is haggis–– heart, lungs, liver.
You shove that all in a sheep's stomach, then you boil it.
That'll put some hair on your ass.
It seems that there is a canned haggis, may have to look for it the next time we're at the world market in Wildwood.
Scotch Eggs look great, will have to try that. Gotta make my statins EARN it. ;)

Discretion is the better part of valor.

Quartus quinta!
A hunter's meal, all the parts that would spoil before the carcasses could be dragged home, spiced with the plants you would find in the woods or heathland, was just what you need to keep you going on the hunt.

When I was Young and in Scotland with my Father He made me try it. It looked a whole lot different than what was pictured. Mine was encased , had Porridge and God Knows what else in it.
Man that brings back memories Good and not so
I thought oatmeal was a common ingredient.
