Best Way To Deal WIth Feral Cats? Laws In MO Against Shooting Them?

I've got a small feral cat problem, that I'm wanting not get worse. One of the cats is a mother cat, who showed up and then gave birth to the rest.

Wanting to go the legal route, as I don't feel like getting arrested for something as lame as killing a cat.

I'd let my dogs have them, but they are pits, and have a feeling that they would then be deemed "vicious".

Also, this may be a stupid question, but what if any health risks do they pose to my dogs? THey've gotten into their crap once or twice, and am hoping that their heartguard has taken care of anything that the cats might have.

Thoughts? Ideas?

I believe the missouri conservation codebook mentions something about "owner may protect property". I would say ask your local conservation officer or just do it the Arfcom way, shoot, shovel and shut up.

Give the kittens time to ween to avoid legal issues, then simply buy a live trap and trap the bastards then turn them over so they can be properly euthanized.

God, what a damn world we live in where you can starve a person to death but can't shoot a feral cat.

Have heard of people using antifreeze before. Just make sure your dogs can't get into it. The cats will go away fast. Its an idea if worried about the noise of a rifle report.

Uh, while the other methods mentioned might be considered fun to some, the long term repercussions of them are not worth it. Do you really want to be persecuted by the local paper and/or TV news channel/s? Yes, as we all know we live in a world where people are kinder to animals than to our fellow man.

Just contact the local animal control and typically they will provide you, free of charge a live trap or two. Capture their little mangy asses and turn them over to the authorities for adoption/extermination.

Do it for the children....

I work with a guy who lives in Higby who has the same problem. He also is in close proximity to his neighbor who owns cats. He used to get the Colibri super subsonic 22lr and pop a few of em to cat heaven each night. Until the neighbor saw him 'do' one. That ended that. The police told him he'd go to jail for it!!!! Idiots...

What he does now is live traps em, brings em out to work, and they get a quiet little dose of vitamin L.

Truly the feral cat problem is outta control. Being a cat owner myself (5 fuzzy cool cats), I can't stand to see the disease ridden lot at all. Shamus, they do pose a rabies issue unless your dogs are not innoculated. Just be glad they also dont have mange. Nothin like your dog losin hair in big patches to make you happy about 'not' killin the wittle puddy tat.

Don't you have an SOT? I'de figger the silencer would have already taken care of this nieusance.

Shamus,

If you are going to eliminate the problem yourself, I wouldn't post anymore about it and I would be very discreet about your actions.

I just got back from court from my ongoing dog shooting case. After dealing with months of headaches, money blown on lawyers, and threats from the owners of the dog, I would probably recommend calling animal control to come pick up the cats.

The Missouri Statutes regarding animal abuse and animal cruelty are not kind to people handling situations on their own anymore. I however have talked to people (at least here in Cole County) that have called the animal control with certain animal problems and they were told that they could handle the situation as they saw fit. It's certainly worth the call.

If you want, IM me and I'll give you the links to the statutes.

MetalMan, while a silencer would make it a bit easier, the last thing I'd want to do is commit a crime with an NFA item. Especially with the license and all. Better to be safe, than sorry with that stuff.

Justin, your case is EXACTLY what I want to avoid. It would be just my luck that the neighbor kids would be hiking/offroading through the woods and see me killing a cute little kitty. Then the sheriffs come, then they want to look in my safe, etc., etc...........

Luckily my dogs are always up to date on their shots. So that helps. But those damn cats are still a nuisance.

The live traps are sounding like a very good idea....................................

Thanks for all the input guys. As always much appreciated.

It's funny that even the conservation department considers the feral cat situation a problem, but they don't seem to be addressing it in any way.....................

Fine and dandy for you to say.

But as an NFA dealer, I am kind of one "who gives a shit about the law", because I don't realy feal like either losing my license, or any firearms.

Any questions?

Shamus! Remember this phrase....
"What cats?"
"I have no idea what you are talking about"

(in Humor) Hmmm I think they must have been on the boat that sank with all my firearms....
