I am out of state so...
Nice folks, also try the Gun Cellar in Hoover if you get a chance.
Low prices, big inventory, very average service...
Over time they have had some serious staff problems, mainly the owner's kids, a guy who was stealing and dealing out the back door, all of whom are no longer there. I am personally not aware of any delliberate dishonesty in dealings with their customers. I mainly know what I want before I wallk in the door of any of these places and I value lower price (and sales tax) over getting a warm and fuzzy feeling from the shopping experience. So I have dealt with them a lot. They usually beat every price in town even before you calculate the tax. They have a big inventory.
Also try Birmingham Pistol Wholesale a couple miles north of SE on hwy 11 north side of Trussville and also have 6% tax. They have a couple hundred guns on display new, used, surplus.

The owners sons are what really soured me on that place. I had a negative experience with one of them when they were still on the parkway in Centerpoint and have not dealt with them since.

+1 on the sour experience with the kids. One gave me bad technical specs when I bought a Bushmaster Varminter, then would not acknowledge his error (his Dad did swap the rifle for the correcly speced one, however). Also, my brother got royally screwed by them on an FFL transfer he arranged by phone with them on a couple AR-10 style rifles. When the weapons got to their store, he was informed he had to pay a percentage of the value over a certain minimum ($400 IIRC). This fee was not disclosed to him over the phone when he arranged the transfer (although it was posted on the counter in the store). I have never heard of an FFL charging by value before - it is really irrelevant to them since they are transferring a prepaid weapon that is shipped to them, what it cost is really irrelevant. They also charged him sales tax, even though he had already paid for the rifles from the out of state originating dealer. I have never heard of that either. The transfer ended up costing him several hundred dollars.
I won't buy from them on principal.
fair prices, but don't expect any service from them what so ever. I was a good customer for years, to the point i knew their sons and had been to their home several times. i don't trust them to do the right thing after the sale, and frankly wouldn't expect them to do much beyond the minimum to make a sale right. i go look occasionally only because they typically have better prices and less tax.

the kids are complete idiots. there is a whole LONG history there better left off the boards.
Thanks guys this thread turned a little darker with over charging, no service, and backdoor guns..
Why does everyone say less tax? State/County/city thing?
I bought a M1 in Annastin at the CMP South Store and I think there was some Crazy 9-11% tax.
Alabama has crazy high sales taxes, the counties and cities pile on top of the states base tax, 9-10% is common in cities across the state, that shop is located in an unincorporated area I think which gives them a 3-4% sales tax break

they have been that way for 20 years.
i was in (Gun Cellar) there around 1300 today, and it was a ghost town; like they were boarding up the place. bare cases, etc. but very helpful customer service though..
HTF has taken A LOT of business from them.. that place was S.W.A.M.P.E.D with ever y LEO in the state it seemed.
gun cellar has been great to me over the past decade, only store i felt the guy behind the counter was informing me more than trying to sell to me.
HTF was also a good place when i was in birmingham around xmas, prices werent anything worth mentioning but the shop and appeal they are giving the shooting hobbies is great. I live in huntsville now and we have larrys which im not complaining they are great.
i drove past South East guns and bham pistol supply yesterday visiting some family and wondered what kind of shops they are. To bad for me i need to save and stay away from my collecting habit a few months. Ive heard alot of businesses in that area are thriving because they dont have the taxes trussville does, which is now what 10 to11 %
I've purchased a couple handguns from SE Guns. Prices and services haven't been too bad. I try and swing by there if i'm in B'ham. I'll swing by Marks Sporting Goods too. I got my MK23 from there. I'm pretty sure i've been in the Gun Cellar once about 5 years back and that place was horrible. I was underwhelmed with their selection and prices. They told me they couldn't sell ANY FN 5.7 ammo or guns because IT'S ALL ILLEGAL COP KILLA'S! Then the assclown working there was trying to convince some guy looking for his first HD gun he needed a pump action 12 gauge shotgun WITH a bayonet on it.

. I didn't stay in there too long. It reminded me of that gunstore from Falling down.
Alabama has a state general sales tax of 4.00%, plus any additional local taxes which can amount to a combined total sales tax of up to 12 percent in some cities [2]. Alabama is one of several states that do not exempt food from state taxes.[36] The capital of Montgomery has a sales tax of 10%.[37] The state's largest city, Birmingham, has a sales tax of 10 percent.[38][39]

This. They beat SE Guns, and Hoover Tactical on an M&P9 by $30. It was $497 out the door while they were asking $499 + tax.
I have bought some CMMG .22 mags and a Magpul ASAP from Mike at S.E. Guns. He's a good guy, can't say much for the others that work there.

he will stab you in the back in a heart beat. i trust the entire bunch about as far as i can see them.
It may not mean much, but I bought a used S&W M64 from Birmingham Pistol Wholesale just up the road from SEG. The salesman was able to give me a bit of a price break right off & when I bought the gun the owner came over & thanked me for coming in. That meant a lot to me & when I get ready to buy another gun, I'll go to Birmingham Pistol Wholesale before I try any place else even though it's quite a drive for me.

Really? they always get up to help me. *shrug*
All else fails try ATI in downtown Birmingham. It may be in the ghetto but the staff is very friendly and helpful.
i have a warm place in my heart for ATI.
great bunch of folks, in a reeel shitty location.
I've never had any problems with S.E.personally. The fact they don't do LEO or MIl discount kinda chaps me, but they've never tried to fuck me over, either.

Well I've only bought a few things there and he seemed ok and helpful. The prices are enough to make me go to BPW.
I saw the BPW guy at the gun show and I asked him how much they were selling M&P9s. He said "I'm not sure but it will be the best price around. We don't like to look at em, we like to sell em

"
He was right.
i was talking about SE guns. I have heard nothing but great things about BPW. i need to get by there.

I understand that. I was saying what little I've done business with them, Mike seemed ok. I guess not.
I was also stating that BPW is the better place and not far from there. Seems like SE does have more of a tacticool selection though.
SE = Mike and Debbie are great people. Some of the other employees are assholes. Good selection, decent prices.
BPW = Johnny has been doing it longer than most around here. Pretty good selection (can order anything you need) best price in town, hands down.

Johnny Walker (BPW) first owned the Tarrent Pistol Parlor but sold it in the 80`s to go wholesale only. Then this last March he opened a retail store back up.
