A
Maryland commission will take its first step Wednesday toward developing a plan to legalize medical marijuana in the state.
The
18-member, state-appointed group is scheduled to work through May 2012
on the feasibility of legalizing the drug for medical use. Medical
marijuana is now legal in 17 states and D.C.
I have nothing against pot, in fact I think it's assinine that it's illegal. My main issue is that the General Assembly is taking the time to support something that is still a Federal crime, all the while, they do everything they can to destroy a Constitutionally protected right.
This is called an "increase in revenue stream" with a total disregard for the public. They just want a way to tax it. When I sit next to a guy at a bar, I don't get drunk because he's drinking a beer. If I'm sitting next to him and he's smoking a doobie, yea, the secondhand smoke will get me high. What if I'm a pilot? CDL? Locomotive engineer? All of these careers are ended instantly with a failed drug test; all because some pot head claims the marijuana makes him "feel better".
Dumb idea all the way around.

Nice one!
I agree with this part of Humongo's statement:
"My main issue is that the General Assembly is taking the time to support something that is still a Federal crime, all the while, they do everything they can to destroy a Constitutionally protected right."
The majority in the General Assembly has NO respect for the 2nd Amendment. I hope the courts will correct that lack of respect with an opinion that smashes Maryland's many infringements.

One can only hope.

You will never fail a drug test by sitting next to someone smoking a doobie. Plenty of studies to back it up.
Legal in house, Yes I think all (all) drugs should be legal, but only in your home. Keep it to yourself stay high in your own home and leave me out of it.

With regards to the whole legalization "thing," my only major complaint is that, when it passes nationwide (and it will), we're likely to see it become even more of a teenage drug than it already is.
The legalization proponents always tries to compare marijuana and alcohol. They claim that the two drugs have comparable medical benefits, potential for harm/abuse, and so on.
But what has largely gone unaddressed, at least as far as I'm aware, is that, as an FDA-controlled substance (alcohol is NOT under FDA), marijuana would be available in a legal fashion -via prescription or otherwise- once you turn 18. With a prescription (i.e. parental consent), that drops to any age. And while it's true there is a legal provision in most states for parents to allow their children to consume alcohol under direct supervision, that's nowhere close to what most people are talking about WRT weed.
Now, I'm not one to start clammoring about how we should pass laws "for the children." That's an idiotic cop-out. All I'm saying is, if we make weed the most easily available drug, then that's what teenagers are going to use. Even today, it's often more difficult and expensive for a kid to get a 6-pack than to get a joint.
As a person who advocates the drinking age be lowered to 18 as a component of an overall campaign to encourage personal responsibility, I'm afraid for what will happen as a society if we open the floodgates to teenage pot use without having that responsibility in place first.

Big +1 to the part in bold.
As far as medicinal marijuana, if it works then go for it. I wouldn't have a problem with all drugs being legalized. But pot does have a legitimate use in the medical field. Some people who take prescription painkillers get sick and they can't take them. And some prescription painkillers make you grow a physical dependency on them. To have them be legal and keep pot illegal is retarded. If pot works for a patient without the side effects of synthetic drugs, then by all means, light up.
