This is a highly Hypothetical question but I was wondering so i figured I'd ask...
My Aunt and Uncle went on vacation, and asked if I would stay at their house to take care of their dogs and just generally watch after the house.
When my uncle left he made a joking comment about "If anything happens the shotguns next to the bed" .
I was wondering what would happen if someone broke in...with the intent to do me harm and i dispatched said burgular to his maker.
Is that kosher? I'm just wondering if me not being the home owner matters. I would assume that my right to defend myself would outway anything else in the equation, but i am surprised by alot of MD law
So I just thought i'd ask
Sounds like a question for a lawyer.
Keep in mind that many people give keys to their house to other people. Pet sitters, plant care service, relatives, neighbors etc. If someone knew they were away but didn't know you were there - they might come checking on the "I saw lights on".
I would be very careful when you are a house guest and don't absolutely understand the coming and goings of the house and people who know the owners.
Once again it was meant as a hypothetical question to a hypothetical scenario.
I wasn't asking if random footsteps should be answered with buckshot... As we all know they should be
And part of the reason my uncle asked me too look after the house was because the last vacation resulted in a break-in.
I guess what I meant was, if I wake up to the sound of a broken glass at night, should I even bother being armed?
Or would it being my uncles house mean that I'd be in legal trouble for even confronting an intruder.
I already know what I would do in such a scenario, I was just wondering if anyone knew the legal ramifications off hand.
If not, oh well I'll have to ask a lawyer someday
...
If you can defend yourself in a hotel room, I am guessing you can defend yourself in a friend's home.
Just do yourself a favor and don't shoot the wrong person

Say "get on the ground". In that situation I don't shoot until I feel my life is in danger, not just a kid looking for jewelry. When it's my house my friends yell when they walk in.
