I have my form 1s filled out for a SBR project. My question is what MDSP barracks (Pikesville or Jessup) do I bring the forms and fingerprint cards to and who do i ask for? I just dont want these to get lost just dropping them off at the front desk, I am a LEO and i know when people bring things to our front desk they can have the tendency to "disappear". Also I heard MDSP doesnt do finger printing anymore? I was told by another officer that CJIS does it on resiterstown road. Is that true? Thanks
Rob
It has been a year or two since I have gone through the process, but...
The Firearms processing by MDSP is now at the Pikesville baracks. When you pull in, there is parking inside the fence around the back of the building for 'Visitors/Customers". From there go into the building and turn to the little reception window on the left, let them know you are there to submit paperwork for the Firearms branch, they'll call for someone to come down.
First things, they'll want is a check to cover the background cost. Personal or money-order, they won't do cash.
Second, the individual will review the forms real quick and then ask you to sign both copies there in front of them (don't sign them in advance).
Give them the orange Maryland fingerprint card, too.
You are done, wait for the Form 1 to come back in the mail, it should go to you. If you submit a Form 4, it will go to the FFL who is handling the transfer.
All of that takes place in the lobby (yea, I was a little hesitant at first).
You do not need to submit the 2x blue ATF fingerprint cards to MDSP (maybe these are what you've heard get lost?).
My experience with MDSP has been acceptable in regards to the NFA paperwork that I have submitted, responses have been on the order of about 3 weeks without any real hiccups.
If you need fingerprinting, MDSP used to have scheduled times at a few different barracks for the old ink-on-your fingers style. I would HIGHLY recommend that you find a place that does the digital scanning (there is a Private Investigator in Glen Burnie that I usually go to). It costs a few bucks more, but they scan your prints once, check to make sure they are valid (not smudged, meet the evaluation criteria, etc...) and then print however many cards you need (make sure to give them the ATF cards). This is way better than getting through the process and having your paperwork kicked back cause the FBI can't process a print and you have to resubmit with new cards.
Supposedly, MDSP will accept the prints electronically (as in not printed on the orange card), but I have never done it that way.
Building anything good? This thread is worthless without at least a description of your project...

Wow thanks a lot for your help....i feel alot more at ease now.....i am building a LWRC m6a2 with a 10.5" barrel. I am trying to find a reasonabley priced 556 can for it as well. I will post pics in a couple of years....hahaahaha
I built a 10.5" AR myself. It took my a few years to get everything together, but I am liking it. Went with the CQB MRP upper from Lewis Machine & Tool. Used a Bushmaster lower (it was in the safe), a RRA 2-stage lower kit and a SOPMOD stock. Finished it off with an Advanced Armaments M4-2k suppressor (which I haven't had a chance to use on the SBR, yet). Found a really good price on a Leupold CQ/T 1-3x optic to put on top of it.
I like the can, have shot it on other AR's and it definitely makes for some fun shooting. The increased gas blowback from the can is a pain, but he Gasbuster charging handle helps a lot with that.
Assembling the rifle is pretty easy, the tough part for me was deciding what I parts I wanted and then shopping for a deal or pinching pennies.
I keep thinking an M203 would make it even more fun, but the bank won't give me the money and my paycheck isn't giving me the 110% that I am asking it for...

That sounds like a sweet rig and i think we have a lot in common when it comes to brands.....the CQT is my favorite scope....let me know if u want to sell that AAC Can. I was actually looking at the M4 1000.

Ahh, thank you. That will reduce my confusion next time I have money to donate to the ATF

I think it was a purple and white card , the last time I did them.
It was an $18.00 fee, no cash. I went with personal check.
Approx. 3 weeks to my door, in the mail, was also my last experience.
Good luck, I was in & out of the Pikesville building in about 10 mins. No pain. Easy.
yea the new card is purple, not orange. and printing is done at the CJIS building on reisterstown road....very good and fast service at both CJIS and Pikesville barracks.
No idea about all the MSP shenanigans. After reading the cumbersome process, I created my own Trust.
I think it's plain stupid to allow the MSP to get their hands in the pie, do a background check and wait 6 weeks, then send it to the ATF, who does exactly the same thing
For me, that made zero sense.
YMMV
