I moved out of MD three years ago when in highschool. Here I am now, thinking about moving back. My reasons are my business, I know its a shitty state.
I"m currently working on acquiring some NFA items(SBR, followed by a can and then an SBS) and would like to know if they're legal there. If so, can I register them through a trust or do I need CLEO signoff on them?
Secondly, I have some pistols. Would I need to register them if I move back in state?
Thanks,
mdguy
MD is actually fairly NFA friendly. MD has some permit or annual fee for "machine guns" I believe but not for anything else as far as I know. You can do either trust or CLEO sign off.
Your pistols probably won't need to be registered, but we do have an "approved" list of handguns. Most anything I've ever wanted is on the ok list.
Edit, there is a tacked thread up at the top here about CLEO or trust route...

Uhh, Are you 21 or older? MD prohibits people under 21 from owning regulated weapons (handguns and "assault weapons")
One thing to keep in mind is that MD treats SBRs and SBS as handguns for transportation, so carefully review the Transporting sticky if you do.
You can do the trust route, but in MD the state police are obligated to sign off on NFA guns if you are not prohibited from owning guns.
I think the only thing that's verboten is explosive destructive devices.
I turn 21 in December

With a trust, the state police aren't involved.
And for mgs, you have to pay $10 each year to register them.
You don't need to register pistols or EBRs that you already own.

On the outside, MD is very anti-gun... But once you get stuck inside and you learn that the gooey MD inside has lot's of loop holes for gun-loving folks.
Handguns that you already lawfully own from the time you were a resident of another State are not required to be registered with Maryland. You should make sure that they are 'legit' with the handgun roster (includes most revolver and semi-automatic handguns). Semi-auto, center-fire rifles are the same category, no need to register if you lawfully owned them while the resident of another State.
Maryland is very NFA friendly, I have several and the longest wait is the NFA approval. MD State Police are the CLEO approval for all of Maryland and will turn around the paperwork in about 2-3 weeks for $18 background check fee. I don't have any -auto's, but there is a $10 annual registration fee for those. Maryland restricts explosive DD's, so no grenades, but launchers (M203, etc...) are cool.
If you have suppressors, SBR's, SBS's, AOW's, etc... in the works, you should be okay with filing the correct BATFE form to cover a permanent inter-State move without any MD involvement.
When you get your MD residency, put in the paperwork to become a 'Collector' with the MDSP and that will wave the 30-day black-out period between registered firearms purchases (handguns & assault-weapons). You'll still have to deal with the 7-day cooling off period.
ps - I'm not a lawyer, so don't quote me in court, but I've followed the above advice and the MDSP still approves my Form 1's and Form 4's with ease.
