Heads up, dog owners. I found a mother fucking tick on my dog just a few minutes ago. I *hate* goddamn ticks. I'm feeling creepy-crawlies all over me as I type this. Ugh. I guess there is one downside to the warm weather.

Give Fido a good going over and break out the Frontline.

Boxelder's are all over by me.

I hope this up and down weather decimates the mosquito population.

I had what my Grandmother called a Christmas Fly. Now I find out him and his buddy survived through New Years and are going strong as I type this. I also had (repeat HAD) a couple box elder bugs visit while I was trying to pump out a few hundred 9mm reloads the other day. As well as a lady bug lookin' Asian beetle thing.

F'in bugs in January??!! Maybe the Mayans are right?

I have 2 sporting dogs and live in Northern Anoka county. The deer tick capital of the world. I got lymes disease when I was clearing my land to build the house and still suffer from the related arthritis.

A word of advice to dog owners: Skip the over priced frontline and go to a feed and seed and pick up a spray bottle of a product called "ultra shield" it's about 25 bucks and will last you 2 or 3 years. It's marketed as a fly and tick spray for horses but if you read the label it's approved for dogs as well. Spray the mutts down and rub it in. It will last about 3 weeks. A nasty little secret your vet and pet store don't want you to know.

Treating my 11-1/2 YO lab mix now for lymes. He's on the 4th week of meds for it, he definately showed signs of improvement within a day of starting him on the meds, but still has a very hard time standing up after laying around for a while. Going to do another 3 weeks and see if he gets any better.

OP, keep a close eye for any changes in your dogs mood and health, if anything looks out of the ordinary get him in for bloodwork ASAP.

My German Shorthair had Lymes as well. A month on the meds and he was back to his old self. Good luck with your pup. Kris55

That's a cold trick to try, DPMM. Bugs don't really bother me all that much except for ticks and the change in weather has removed any tick paranioa for now.

Thanks to the other poster for the anti-tick spray, we'll give that a try this spring. Frontline is so danged expensive. I've been lucky in that I've never found a tick stuck to the dogs yet. Found 7 in one night wondering around the golden retriever's fur but none were stuck.
