Range rules that permit or condone the use of dead people...
norseman1  [Team Member]

There have been some debates at local gun clubs regarding the use of paper targets with expired famous people.

Bin Laden is the one most ranges permit.
Saddam was a fun one... So were his sons.
Saw a few of Hitler and other WWII bad guys.

But, I don't know if there is a list of ranges that ban this or not.

Bald Eagle changed the rules in the last 2-3 years to not allow anything that was not range provided or NRA approved silhouette targets.
(bad publicity if someone brought in something truely tasteless)

I don't believe Oakdale allows anything outside of the NRA silhouette targets for human figures.

Bills allows just about anything... no pictures of living individuals who didn't want to pose for a target.

Any others that I am missing?

Oakdale stopped selling black-printed targets a number of years ago and switched to red and blue, because there were people on the board who were concerned that having black targets might open them up to racial criticism from anti-gunners.

There are some big time Chicken Littles in that gun club.

are there any decent ranges in the metro other than oakdale? I'm actually about to join that horseshit so I can shoot regularly

All depends on what you want. Oakdale's been fine for me, I just avoid getting entangled with the morons.

Red and blue? Apparently political criticism, never mind. It's too early for this.

Oakdale is not a bad range, aside from a few quirky rules. Nice facilities, clean, safe, and relatively close.

Can you describe the horseshit? I am a member too and have never had a problem shooting there. And no, you cannot shoot photorealistic targets, but that is not a huge factor for me to say "I blew away BIN LADEN""!@@!*()#$(*)#$# OMGWTFBBQ!!!

You should be good to go at the Hinckley Cons. Club range.
As long as it's paper, and not the cadavers.

Oakdale sells black targets.

There are members there that do not approve of EBR's etc. but as long as members stay within the rules...no problem.

Steel for members during member only hours..no problem as long as you are safe. Same with drawing from a holster.

Where else within 15 minutes from St. Paul can I do that?

A great range.

They may sell them now (I typically don't buy my targets from them), but they had stopped for at least some time.

The more people that believe that Oakdale Gun Club sucks (including members) means the fewer people at the range for me to have to worry about. I have a private range nearly every time I shoot there.

The horseshit I describe was the attitude I was shown as an 18 year old AR shooter, that was 6 years ago though, I haven't been back since to see if anything has changed

If you think Oakdale's the only place you're going to find that, I think you're going to be sadly disappointed.

ive been a customer at oakdale for 16 years and a member for 3 of those years.

the ONLY problems i have EVER had, were with asshole "customers" when the public is allowed to go there.

take away the $$$ from the public shooters, and our membership costs will go up 4x

now if a young guy with an uh-salt rifle got stereotyped and treated poorly, they probably assumed you were going to blast away with no regard to accuracy. you can see this kind of stereotype AND activity at ANY gun range.

I personally wouldnt join any other club. I was out there today for the pistol and the 100 yard line, and had it all to myself I even shot a 1/2" group at 100 yards with a 1952 Enfield rifle, iron sights, Wolf Gold ammo. unfortunately no one was there to brag to, but ive got the target to prove it

Shooting at OGC as a member of the public and shooting at OGC as member of OGC are 2 completely different things.

I thought the photo realistic target thing was only a rule there when open to the public. Even if it isn't, I can't imagine another member saying anything about it during member only hours. You can also shoot IDPA/USPSA targets during public or member only hours.

I am member at Minnetonka Game and Fish and OGC at the moment. I'll probably let OGC go because it can be irritating for me to practice there sometimes, but it isn't as bad as people try to say it is. If you are serious about shooting at all, it is TONS better than not being a member anywhere.

Well I thought I was being polite, lots of yes sir, asking about the rules etc, but when my AR came out condescending came with it RSOs were standing over me the whole time, saying stupid shit to me, general asshatery. Ive lived in WI for the last 6 years and the first range I went to had more AR shooters than I had ever seen, great group.

Ive pretty much decided to join OGC, its near my job

Having been involved at OGC in one way or another for the better part of the last twenty years, I can definitely say that the club has suffered from a lack of young people for a lot of years. That said, it's getting better as time goes on. There are more and more of us joining and becoming active out there. I can certainly believe your story about getting treated that way, as there are people out there who would do that, but there are also a lot of us younger guys with EBRs out there.

At BESA, I'm not afraid to dress down a fellow member who gets on his high horse and pontificates that the range is not for "assault rifles".

We have our fair share of FUDS who feel its THEIR range and just for THEIR type of equipment.

For RSO duty, I just make sure EVERYONE follows the rules. Even club members... you set an example by being there.

The unfriendly treatment I received last time at OGC 4 years ago is the very reason I belong to BESA.

Guys, let me apologize on behalf of OGC for any maltreatment you have received. It's not what the club is trying to go for and we try to be stewards and create a positive shooting community. My recommendation is to go there with a member during non-public hours. You will see that it is truly a great place to shoot. Membership is also being expanded this year, so get on the list if you are interested! Any one of us members posting on this thread would be happy to host you as a guest!

No bump-firing and no photo realitic targets
