Moving to KY, need some info please

Kentucky is about to get bigger by 4 people. I just got orders there. Can anyone tell me about the Owensboro area? I hear it's small.
I really like to hunt. Not very big into fishing. I've got a couple of NFA items and would like to add on after I get there. Are the CLEO's friendly or did most of you guys have to do a trust?

Any info would be great!

Can't find housing online. Wife and I are stuck with our current mortgage and can't sell due to the housing market being craptastic. We have to rent but can't find any rentals up that way. HELP!!!!

Welcome to Kentucky. If you're into guns, you'll love the Owensboro area. Just head for Whitaker's Guns in West Louisville (not to be confused w/ Jefferson County Louisville). Best and largest gun store in Kentucky.

I live near Owensboro. Yea its big, they just have a lot of stuff in there but nothing that blows my skirt up.

Ive been to smaller gun shops in Louisville that had a much nicer selection

How's the hunting out that way? Long distance or short shots (100yds)like the coast? Let me guess, it's all private and you have to join a club?

Nah. Nice thing about Kentucky, make one friend and chances are they'll invite you onto land somewhere nearby to hunt.

Go to Moonlight BBQ on your first day in Owensboro.

Plan a full day for the "US 60 Garage Sale" too.

If you like to shoot 3 gun and action pistol there is a first rate gun club nearby.

There is also a pretty shotgun club (trap, skeet sporting clays) on the same side of town.

Its unlikely you've seen a better stocked fun store than Whittakers

Need help finding housing guys. My wife and I can't buy a house there because we're saddled with the one we're currently in and we're going to have to rent.

Anyone got any sort of leads on rentals in Owensboro or the surrounding 20 miles? Wife and I can't find anything online. We called a realtor up there and he's got nothing.

Also go on the bourbon trail, it’s awesome and you get free liquor. At the makers mark distillery we got a bottle unavailable outside of the plant and did the wax ourselves. Also we dipped some shot glasses.




It was totally free, even the samples and it consisted of, Makers Mark, Heaven Hill, Jim Beam, Wild Turkey, Four Roses, Woodford Reserve. We split it into 2 days but you could do it in one if you wanted.

Also I’ve talked to officers here in Elizabethtown and they’ve told me that they have a pretty relaxed attitude toward weapons because; in his words "everyone has a gun here". Also he invited me to the machine gun shoot so that makes me assume they don’t mind NFA items. I haven’t locked down a gun store or a place to shoot just yet but I haven’t been here that long. I have a thread in this forum asking about that, if you keep an eye on it it might help you find a place too.

And I should mention that Louisville is very nice to walk around especially 4th st live and near the water. There are also lakes with beaches weve been to and places to go fishing but I dont remeber where, Ill ask the person I went with tomorrow.


Overall everyone is really nice, the area is really pretty and for some reason storms are low to the ground or something and it makes thunder sound like it outside your door. Which is cooler than it sounds. Also really great sunsets and sunrised.

Oh I almost forgot, U.S. Calvery's headquarters is just down the street from me which is pretty cool. Definately saves on shipping.
