Fort Campbell area
I seem to remember a thread a month or two back where someone asked about the best gun shops in the greater Fort Campbell area. I thought it was on this site but I can't find the thread now. Maybe it was in general discussion. Well...I'm visiting my son near Fort Campbell this week (he recently returned from Iraq) and was looking for the same information. If anyone could provide me with a link to that thread or has some good info on the Fort Campbell area it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Best prices and good selection with a friendly staff is Gun and Knife Country across from gate 6 on FT Campbell blvd.
Tennessee Gun Country also on FT Campbell blvd is also a good shop and prices seem to have gotten a little better there recently. Great ammo selection there. Open on Sundays too.
I also like Alan's guns on 79. Good selection, helpful staff and lots of surplus guns.
There is QTS (Quantico Tactical) also on FT Campbell blvd between gates 4 and 3 in a little strip mall. They have guns but their main thing is all the gun accessories and tactical gear. If I am looking for magpul, troy, and the like I go here. Open on Sunday as well.
If I was visiting the area I would make the grand tour starting in Oak Grove by the Wal-Mart and head south along FT Campbell blvd hitting most of the good shops.
In order from North to south:
US Cavalry Tactical store in the little strip mall next to walmart. Some great AR accessories and always lots of stuff on sale.
next heading down FT Campbell blvd on the left side across from gate 6 is Gun and Knife Country. My favorite gun shop in the area.
a little farther on the left next too a Verizon store is ATS tactical. A little bit of guns, lots of gun accessories and gear. Not open on the weekends.
Next on the left is the big US Cavalry store right across from Gate 4. Not a lot of gun stuff there, but lots of gear and clothing.
Next would be QTS mentioned above. Best to just cut over from US Cav's parking lot through a few other adjoined parking lots until you get to QTS a few doors down. It's hard to get in their parking lot from the road otherwise.
Now we cross the state line into Tennessee and a few miles down on the right is Grandpas Outdoors. I hate to mention this one. First off is their stupid No Concealed handguns sign in the door. It says it's because they sell beer, but that doesn't mean anything under the law. Hell you can carry in a bar in TN as long as it's not posted as no guns and you aren't drinking. Next is their crappy selection. The service is ok, but their prices will leave you feeling like you just got prison gang raped. I don't go there often unless I need some kind of hardware store stuff real bad.
Just keep going down FT Campbell blvd another mile or so and you will find Tennessee Gun Country in a little strip mall on the left by "Signs Now".
After there, if you keep heading south on FT Campbell blvd you will get to the junction of RT79 aka Dover Road to the right. Follow 79 a few miles and it will bring you to Alan's Guns on the right side. If you keep on going down 79 after that you will get to 101st Parkway after a mile or so and it will bring you right back to FT Campbell blvd.
That's pretty much the grand tour.
Thank you for the information. That is exactly what I was looking for! Have a great and safe New Years!
Excellent post Chris. The only two you left out were Anthony's Arms and that little place over on Tiny Town Rd in the strip mall and neither are really anything to make a special trip for.
If you have time then a trip up to Whittaker's is worth the 90 mile drive.
I left them out on purpose. Neither was worth mentioning. I heard Anthony's doesn't sell guns anymore. Big iron munitions on tiny town road had more gun purses and pepper spray in their store than guns every time I had been in there. They are a new shop though so maybe I need to go by again to see if they got any better.
I really debated on mentioning Grandpa's though. It was mentioned more out of warning than anything else.
I thought about mentioning whitakers after I posted but I was packing to go to the range. Glad you mentioned it. It really is worth the drive if for nothing else just to get a T shirt and say you've been there.
The man above speaks the truth.
I do my best to stay away from Grandpa's. Prices will cause a pacemaker to explode.
Alan's–– Well I used to go there quite a bit. Saw some things there that just went against my morals.(Not illegal, just plain disrespectful)So they are on my do not set foot in list. Also prices are higher than other stores you mentioned.
I usually hit TN Gun Country, decent prices and selection, Military Discount, and sometimes there is some wiggle room on inventory. Have always had good customer service, no matter if buying a target, or a gun. Same service. For those that reside in TN, then that is the shop to hit for handguns.
Gun and Knife –– prices are good, and service is good. selection is fair, and they have some wiggle room. Has become a nicer place (less of the smell).
I saw you did not mention––-
CK Outfitters on Hwy 79. (Granted it is more of a FUDD store).
Pawn Shops on FTCKY Blvd. or the one on Riverside.––- I have bought from them on multiple occasions. Sometimes they negotiate, and other times the do not. I have better luck with the one on Riverside.
Guns and Leather down towards Nashville.
There is also a gun shop in Cadiz, KY (or atleast there was.. haven't been there in awhile)
I stopped in to CK outfitters on the way back from a IDPA match at Rattlesnake Ridge a month or two ago. Not really much of a gun shop. Did they have any guns at all? more of a hunting/fishing outfitter.
I tried to go to the on in Cadiz one weekend but it was closed when I got there. Long way to go just to find a closed sign. Haven't tried back since.
Been to one small one in Princeton once. Not a bad little place. I need to find the other guy in Princeton. The Class III dealer I see at the Paducah gun shows.
Guns N Leather in Greenbriar, TN is one of the better Tennessee shop I have seen. I try to hit it up whenever I go to Nashville.
I guess one of the main reasons I really favor Gun and Knife Country over Tennessee Gun Country is that I am a KY resident. That automatically cuts out the whole handgun selection for me at TN dealers unless I want to do a transfer. Also the $10 TN background check fee really rubs me the wrong way, but that's not hte fault of TN Dealers. The ammo tax bugs me too, but not as much as the background check fee.

Yes to all the above.
As for CK, I haven't been there in quite awhile.
But it was a FUDD gun store.
Just the opposite as you for handguns because I am on the TN side.
Don't get the PX policy either.
Agree about the TN check fee, and ammo tax, but it does go back into the TWRA fund.
As for Cadiz, if going to LBL, then worth checking to see if open.
I have talked to one of the guys at the PX gun counter about thier policy. Actually it's not hteir policy it the BATFE. As with any dealer, they can only sell handguns to reidents of the same state. When they opened the gun counter at the PX it had to be either KY or TN since the base straddles the state line. The BATFE said since they are on the KY side of the line and the mailing address is KY then the PX is a KY dealer.
I think MWR should start a rod and gun club on the TN side of the base like so many other military bases do, and have a gun shop that is a TN dealer. That way they could have an agreement between them that if a resident form the other side wants to purchase a handgun, then they can transfer it to the one on the other side.
In reality though, you aren't missing much if you can't purchase a gun at the PX. Selection is kind of lame and prices are full retail on most of it.
I do like the fact that the BATFE does consider soldiers stationed at FT Campbell to be residents of both KY and TN for the purpose of purchasing hanguns. If I find a handgun I really have to have on the TN side I can alway just have my wife buy it for me. As a gift of course.
