Hi guys. Looking to move further north in the next 2 years. I once lived in Upstate NY for a spell and really liked the climate (Yeah I love snow and cold), but don't want to go back because of gun laws and NY Taxes. I have narrowed down my choices to Northern VT, Northern NH, And Norhtern Maine. I know that VT HAs the best gun laws, Adn hardly any Zoning laws, but undesiarble taxes. Any opinions would be greatley appreciated. BTW for refrance I'm Looking to buy land and build.

Having lived throughout NH and ME, I'd go with NH.

Maine has the most open space but the sales and income tax are not a plus.
Vermont taxes are not much better.
Northern New Hampshire would be the best bet.
I live in Maine but I have some proprety in NH,in the upper half of the state. Can't tell the difference between any of the three once you are out in the back country,so it boils down to laws, taxes and politics.NH does look good from a lot of angles, not perfect but very nice.
If they would unload that Governor Lynch it would get better quick.

Lynch is not running for re-election. He's seen the writing on the wall.

I have lived in Maine for most of my 42yrs.

This June we are moving to ALASKA.

New England does not give me a warm fuzzy feeling anymore. Thank all the liberals from down south.

Way far from that crap. Been there, will not go there. Going nice and quiet.... Off the grid.
Well rooted in, nothing new up there. I'm not a "Crab fishin, Gold diggin, Ice road truckin, Airplane flyin, State Trooper". I do Plumbing and Heating.

How far north in each state? Parts of Northern ME might as well be the end the universe. I guess that you could say the same about NH. VT has Burlington in the north though I don't know why you would want to move there.

cans are perfectly legal in NH...

as a mainer, i'd suggest NH. gun laws are about the same, but they can hunt on sundays and they'll have "constitutional carry" by the end of the year. also, there is much more opportunity for employment there.

I think all three northern NEstates should adopt a "may issue" residential aplication in order to save themselves from al the "progress". If you voted for Democrats in southern NE states, you don't get to come in. .

Don't know where that came from. I come from PA, A "Shall Issue State" and am Conservative as they come.

Sorry, Not directed at you personly so much as a commentary on many of our transplants.... We could use more folks who are like what you describe yourself as. We are having real trouble with people from Mass and other southern NE states as well as NY and NJ coming here and trying to change the state and re-create the place they justcame from.... mostly confined to southern Maine and certain pockets of the coast but it effects northern Maine quite badly because they get bossed around by the southern part of the state. Many of the industries and projects that benefit the north are under constant assault by people, politicians and interest groups from southern Maine who just want to keep the north as their own personal playground for hiking. Every year or so there is a state rep from Aroostook County who proposes a Northern Maine succession bill just to make a point of the issue. The post before mine is probably correct about NH having more opportunity and a little bit less of the change attitude.

I hear ya BM. Thats why I said NORTHERN. I am well aware of the situation in the southern parts. (I am in New England thru most of the week.) We have the same problem here with people from NY and NJ. Part of the reason I want to GTFO. They come here to escape high cost of living ang high taxes, Drive up the property values and prop taxes them vote for the same bullshit politicians. Stupid, Cant fix it.

Is this a retirement idea or will you be looking for work too? If retirement you are gtg but work is tough there for many reasons but the issue I stated above realy is becoming a big problem for northern Maine and employement there.

As stated by a previous poster, you should check your facts. Suppressors are gtg in NH and ME. They are currently forbidden in VT but there is a move afoot trying to correct this.

I did see this posted in hometown.
I actually am leaning more toward Vermont at this point. PrimarilyFrom what I am understandind the majority of towns in rural VT do not have zoning. That is a big plus in my book. Anybody car to chime in on New Hampshire Zoning laws up north?

Little to no zoning in most NH towns, especially north and west parts of the state, plenty of crap in the lib run cities.

VT is the one northern NE state that does ban suppressors.

well, PA isn't a "southern NE state" either, so i doubt that comment was pointed at you.

I vote New Hampshire. I've visited all of them, but seriously considered New Hampshire as an alternative to Colorado. It never panned out for us, by I still have a place for it in my heart. Beautiful.

Good luck. The whole north east is beautiful - Politics aside.
