Some creature killed 6 of my ducks! WTF!?!?!
I
havehad 6 pet ducks. Puddles, waddles, quackers, abbey, sophie, and Abbobo. I've always expected to lose one or two to predators, but not all 6. Not all at once. Things don't add up.
Early this a.m. after we let them out of the pen, something got to them. Four ducks are GONE completely. Two were mortally wounded. One gasped it's last breath in wifey's arms. The other one was all fucked-up and I ended up putting a few .22shorts in it's head (fucking bloodorgy

)
There was no sign of struggle. No feathers. No blood. No fur. Just a bunch of missing ducks. I need to add that these were peking runners. They are stupid as bricks and can only fly across the yard before they get winded and fall on their face (so that rules out the 4 flying away) They are also fat as fuck and full-grown because I feed them well and had intended to eat them over a period of time.
The two that were mortally wounded both had VERY large and deep penetrations through the sides of their breast. I had no problem pushing a pencil an inch into each wound before hitting resistance. I have them in the freezer right now as I'm not sure if DEP would be interested in them.
My back yard is just under 1 acre cleared and fenced-in. There is wooded area behind it, but two houses flank the wooded area.
My questions are......what the fuck could have gotten in, and killed 6 fat, retarded ducks in 30 minutes before dawn? 4 not to be found, and 2 with deep fucking bite marks in them? We just got in from doing the blood-trail thing with a blue LED and everything.
And do I call the DEP? Will they raep me because I put one of the duckies down with a few CB caps? I've heard of instances where people shoot an animal, call DEP, and then DEP runs train on them with all sorts of charges because I don't have duck tags and they are out of season or something because I wasn't 500ft from a house? I mean they are my pets dammit! I would think if a tyrannosaurus got in my yard, they would want to know about it (so they can cover it up!)
what do I do? what killed my ducks? Yotes, fox, mountain lion, fishers, chinese people? I have a mag of Barnes TSX on standby though.
here are my ducks as little babies
its either a message from an enemy or the chupacabra
but it is one or the other
Sorry to hear about them. I can't offer any advise as what to do though.

Have you guys overlooked the zombies... ??? There could be an outbreak!
Fisher cat look it up you live near pine trees??
In some areas, fishers can become pests to farmers because they can get into a pen and kill large numbers of chickens.
OK, all jokes aside you idiots.
Dan,
Coyote, fox, hawk, owl, feral cat, weasel, stoat or fisher cat (do you have a river near by?), Multiple of the above, stray dogs. Even raccoons can do that kind of damage.
Bobcats also. Bears? Maybe, no likely, blacks aren't that predatory they are more scavenger type.
Sounds like something grabbed and dragged 4 away. I'm thinking pack animals, so I vote roaming dogs. My dog from way back, got busted at a neighbors farm killing chickens one AM after he got out.
What kind of fence do you have? Its not a mesh cuz something got thru it.
I would rule out Tasmanian Devil. But I would not rule out Santeria crazed Hispanics or Haitian Voodoo Shamans performing a ritual.Maybe mushroom eating hippies. I had to make a joke, you know that.
I'd rule out retarded teenage vandals, too early in the morning, and its a week day.
Honestly tho, I despise this kind of waste of life and suffering, even for a stock or harvested animal.

Earth Station Dan to Nutter, come in Nutter.
All safe. pics incoming.
Thanks for the owl idea. We had a big fucking owl in the yard a while ago. The ducks went ape and I went out there and lazed the fucker and he left like an Iraqi seeing a kiowa.

big fucking lake 1/5 mile down the road.
fence is 75% mesh, the rest is slat wood with very few small gaps at the ground.
Woods is all hardwood. Very little pine.
Duck 1:
Wounds are on opposite sides of breast. You can see the lower one best. The feathers cover up most of the gore. Thats a surefire 6PL to give you an idea of distance. About 4"

Duck #2. This is the one I put down. The big f'ing wound on the side is NOT my doing.
This is raw meat under here. The skin is largely torn away. He has a much smaller wound on the other side under the left wing. This wound is kinda on his belly/breast.
Not evident in either photo are puncture wounds that are about 1/4" diameter
California condor?
ETA: 2nd duck sure looks like a strike from bird of prey, but no scattered feathers means low velocity. Wonder what DEP err DEEEEP will say.
You need to post these pics in GD "My 16000th post and the aftermath"

My first thought is those wounds were caused by talons. But 4 gone at once seems a little much even for a large bird.
I saw a bobcat recently in Redding while in a treestand. SOB was 15 ft from me when I finally noticed him, dead silent as he walked off. Could be one of those, but again 4 gone with no trace seems a bit much. My money is on 1 or more dogs.
You can call the DEP if you want, but I would omit the part about you blasting one.

Yeah, Andrapos is dropping off a trail cam today. I'll be getting a few replacement ducks as "bait" shortly.
I think you are right with DEP. It's a shame. Any other part of the country I wouldn't have to cover my bunghole for calling them.
I will throw my .02 in ...a Hawk possibly.
You guys are obviously ignoring the facts here. Think about it: 4 gone without a trace, 2 mortally wounded.
Based on the raging clue I'm getting, it can only be 1 of 2 culprits (or the 2 culprits working together). From the preponderance of evidence I've seen, it's either ninjas or The Mob. See, a little known fact about ninjas is that they leave no trace of their victims. The victim will be there one moment and gone the next, leaving no evidence that they were there in the first place. No doubt the ninja(s) used both shuriken stars and nunchuks on your ducks to subdue them before politely molesting them in the back of a van under a bridge in downtown Hartford. This would have left the poor ducks feeling confused, scared even, about the horrible fate that awaited them. This fate would be worse than death - they'd be forced to listen to Justin Bieber albums over and over again until they offed themselves in a manner consistent with the ninja code: seppuku.
However, my second theory is that The Mob simply didn't like the fact that you prefer Glocks over Sig Sauers and decided to leave you and offer you couldn't refuse. No doubt there is likely a severed duck head in your bed as I type this drivel. What The Mob did, most likely, is hire the ninjas to carry out the job for them because a true mob boss never gets his hands dirty. They hired the best in the biz, but what the mob didn't realize is that ninjas are known to be perverts so what you actually may find is not a duck's head, but rather a doubleended jelly dong, a tarp, and 2 tubes of KY jelly.
But that's just my theory...

Can I take a second to make the hair on the back of your neck raise a little? Because Dan just made the hair on the back of my neck stand.
Backdrop:
Im a woodsman, Im out there all the time, we have about 13 acres of woods behind my house. Almost every Saturday I have a fire out back, usually 10-15 people but sometimes more.
I and another fellow hunt back there, I've heard and seen coyote but less frequently than a few years ago. There are also some deer, they call from the same spot every night at about 11 like clock work, approximately half a mile to my southeast. I've also heard some fox "screams" in the summer and theres small animals like crazy. (rabbit etc)
Story:
So last Saturday night theres about 6 of us out there, its early, 8 oclockish, and we have about a 7 or 8 foot tall fire going. 2 ladies are sitting on the picnic table to my right, the other 3 are guys standing at my side looking at the fire, with our back to the trail that leads down there.
With no prior sound or warning there is a HUGE "crash" in the woods DIRECTLY behind us, Im talking 4 feet behind us, sounded like someone walked off the trail, tripped and was rolling around in the leaves breaking sticks and shit. We all whip around thinking its this girl Danielle that is always off the path (bad night eyes). Nothing. A second later we hear the crash again but about 10 feet off to our left now. (when my M&P got un-tucked) I could see just fine for some 40-50 feet (there was nothing there), but at this point all the headlamps and maglites go up, theres gotta be 2000+ lumen turning a portion of the woods into day time, but theres nothing to see. We hear whatever it was, breaking sticks and rustling leaves 3 more times in close proximity and within our light but heading south, me and a buddy Joe pursue. About 100 yards south of the pit theres a chain link fence that borders probably a 100 acre field. We chased the crashing sound to the fence and lit up the field, we didn't see a damn thing, and without flashlight we could see clear across the field.
Im not into the paranormal or anything, and I don't have many thoughts on "monsters" so I just told myself it was a deer. I think we all just told ourselves it was a deer, but a lot of it didn't add up. We had a huge fire and were making lots of noise, a deer would not want to be anywhere near us, same goes for a coyote really. Secondly, we should have heard whatever it was incoming, there was no crashing from a distance getting closer, just started with a shit ton of noise right on top of us. Whatever it was may have been up a tree when we first came down, but it had to be 200+ pounds and moved in 15-20 foot leaps. Third, nobody saw it, it was on top of us, large and making a ton of noise, and we lit it up but nobody saw anything. A deer is too big to miss from that distance. Shit me and my buddy were pursuing the crashing sounds in 20 ft gaps, but only a few yards right in front of us. The only reason we called it a deer was because a deer is the only thing I know that can leap 20 feet. (and I didn't want to scare the ladies) They get scared when they hear a rabbit pattering the leaves 50 ft away.
Whatever it was must have decided a bunched of armed men in the woods was too tough a target and sprang south to go get some duck. Im sorry to hear about that Dan, I hope you find the culprit.
We had 14 ducks out back before. They would be in a fenced area with a pool during the day and inside a large dog pen with a roof at night. I live right on the CT River and border farmland, so fox and coyote visits are almost daily. The worst threat to the ducks were raccoons at night, climbing over the chain linked fence. In MA, we can legally shoot an animal that is "worrying, chasing or maiming" livestock, so a lot of raccoons were killed out back.
Funny thing about me, the neighbors never call the police. I fell asleep one night on the couch and forgot to put the ducks in the pen that night. I woke up at 2am, grabbed a flashlight, but forgot my 317 snubby loaded with shorts that I usually brought with me. When I got close to the pen, I heard the fence rattling and knew a raccoon was trying to climb over. I lighted it up and shot it with the only handgun I still had on my, a Glock 23. Did you know that, on a nice, calm, cool summer night, there's some anomoly where a .40 S&W Ranger SXT get a LOT louder at 2am?
The PD is about a mile from my house along the river. I called them, like I do every time I shoot out of courtesy, just to let them know in case someone calls. They don't have a problem with it, but I just don't want to force them to respond. When I called this time and told them that I shot, they said "I know, what the hell did you use?" They laughed about it, and still, nobody even called the PD.
I'm not saying that a raccoon carried away your ducks, but I've had several killed at one time by a raccoon going after eggs. They do get ripped open pretty badly.
Jersey Devil, Zeggies story has convinced me.

Thanks! I'll let you know. I need to get some "bait" first. Andrapos let me borrow one cam already. I think Tractor Supply has chickens and ducklings. If not, there are about 30 farms within a mile of here.
Zerg. You telling campfire stories here?

Do I need to up my game to 7.62NATO?
Hawg. You are throwing me off without Burt Gummer. Thanks for the tips. I'm starting to think owl. I didn't get a chance to call DEP today because I just finished working a few minutes ago. Calling them in a.m. tho.

That sucks man. But the story about the sounds in the woods....ooff!
I grew up in Washington State, we camped everywhere when I was a kid, from Oregon, Cascades, Mt. Rainier, to the Athabasca Glacier Park, to Banf, Canada, Lake Louise. One summer when I was staying with my Dad, my Mom and her second husband went to Banf for a trip, their camp was attacked by a brown bear, they brought back food cans that look just like popeye had poped em open. Bigfoot is real, that's all I'll say about that, but in CT??? Maybe...
Your ducks, my first thought would be bird of prey. I drive up I-91 from New Haven to Hartford a lot, I see HUGE freaking flying things all the time on the stretch right after Wallingford. I know it's been said already, but those things totally could have done it, a nest near by and bingo-4 round trips loads up the nest. I used to live in a condo and there were these cats, one of them successfully mauled my 70lbs. prey drive crazy Pitbull (she was younger then, she 12 now) from under some damn 2" of ground ivy cover, cut her cornea, they used to get birds all the time, smaller albeit, but the feathers were EVERYWHERE, we know that when something hauls off with a bird, on the ground feathers are going to be shed like crazy. That's why I'd toss in my 2cents it's some kind of bird of prey. I'm not a naturalist but I went to high-school at H.S.C. in New Haven when it was still alternative, my senior year was at the Nature Conservatory near West Rock for an environmental class all day long the last quarter, they had cats, and birds from CT that were friggen huge. So we've got the predators. My condo was on top of Branford Hill, and we'd get deer there at 4:00 a.m. eating grass.
So, bigfoot, or bird of prey.

Those are Turkey vultures or Virginia grey winged vultures. Possible but not likely especially predawn, they fly on hot air updrafts and dont move much before the the sun warms up their bones.
Now I;m hearing my neighbors say they have seen huge Norwegian rats. They would definitely be suspects.

Ok, The trail cam is up. I couldn't get any chicks at my local tractor supply, so I put out some raw chicken quarters. (i'll pick up some real animals this weekend. Some bunnies or whatever the fuck is good bait until I can locate some ducklings).
I moved my motion lights to point INTO the house to wake me up while I sleep on the couch. The sensor is pointing outside. I'm clever like that.
It would be nice if the NFA branch would get off their ass and approve my suppressor though.
And yes, that white feather does have dual meaning.

How tall is the fence? our experience with with fox is that they will not clear a 4ft. fence. My vote is a small group of yotes. male and female paired up could make off with four ducks pretty quick. whatever it is put two into it just to be sure

I moved my motion lights to point INTO the house to wake me up while I sleep on the couch. The sensor is pointing outside. I'm clever like that.
It would be nice if the NFA branch would get off their ass and approve my suppressor though.

4ft wire around 75% of the yard
6ft wood around 25%
checked all for fur traces. Nothing.

I'd guess a fox or two , see the link. Bite marks are consistent with fox. They also carry them off.

Foxes are really good at not being seen. They do smell pretty ripe if you ever get near one though.

So I went out back and climbed a tree last night to see if anything would come walking by. Nothing, but I did piss off a HUGE owl. Fucker must have been near 3 feet tall, started hooting at me when I was climbing the tree he was in. Brave son of a bitch too, I was sitting 30 feet below him in the tree and it just paid no attention to me and kept doing its thing. (hooting every couple of minutes)
Thats when it hit me.
Dan, with the info you provided I think everything is pointing to an owl. Your fenced in, it was in the pre-dawn hours, no sounds, no evidence of an extreme struggle.
Any attack from the ground would likely result in a struggle, lots of sound, and feathers everywhere. Coyote make too much noise when hunting for you to not have noticed, and even if a fox could leap a fence (which I believe they could) it would have a hard time doing it with an animal in its mouth. Fox can also make some noise while hunting. Unless you have a clear sign of a burrow or dug out area under your fence I would rule out land based animals.
Hawks and falcons don't hunt in the dark. It was prime time and size of prey for a large owl. Probably swooped in and just took em away one at a time. The other two may have just put up enough of a struggle to make it worth bypassing them and going for one of the others.
If it wasn't an owl it was a really big, hungry, pissed of snake. . . . . or homeless guy.
