Steel Targets

hey guys,

just shoot steel for the first time this past weekend. had a great time out to 200 yards! I really have no idea where to get some steel to stand up to 556 and 308. I know there are online companies that make specific targets but I was really looking more for just some "scrap pieces" that a local company may sell. just looking for small squares or rectangles. also about how much should the steel cost?

like i said im brand new into the steel but i loved it and want to learn more.
any help is greatly appreciated.

I have seen steel targets that are fine with .308 all day but get torn up with 5.56. You have to get the correct material and thickness.

VLODPG, how close up have you shot those steel targets with 223/556? thanks

I also have the earlier version of this target in 3/8" AR500.

The 1st time out we were shooting the shit out of it w/55g 5.56, 147gr 7.62mm, & unknown 7.62x39. (BDS recommends yd min) The 3/8" target held up without damage.

We had it between the 50-75yd marker on the range & were beating the shit out of it. The target held up fine, the welded tab(not the weld) that held the return spring didn't fare so well, & broke. I had it welded & broke again. My welder made another mounting tab for the return spring but because of the way it mounted didn't weld both sides. The weld broke broke this time & now it is welded on both sides.

No further issues with the return spring mount but this is moot because they completely redesigned the base & return spring mounting. When I wear out the old base I will replace it with one of the new bases.

IMO, I feel they were/are worth the money. My club purchased some in 1/2" for our members to shoot & the members bought their own.(12 in total)

I have several of their small poppers and they've held up well. You have to keep them at 100 yards or further for most rifle rounds and I wouldn't use steel core on them by choice but they survived a few hits, you could see the dent though, where regular ammo doesn't do any damage.

That's the model I have. The prices have gone up I see, but still reasonable for what you get. Mine have held up well and are probably good for many years of use if I keep the bolts tightened. After using these I would only buy another brand if MGM didn't have and couldn't make me what I wanted. I'd probably buy an MGM plate and MAKE a setup with that before using something else.

I've had a good experience with the steel plates from Widener's.

BTW, it's insane that waterjets can do this.
