Very pleasant surprise
I always get delayed on the so-called "instant" background check. Always. And I've been bitching up a storm recently as the delays drag on to 4 days every time I buy.
I stopped at the new Richmond range to buy my wife a surprise...a Julie Golob edition M&P she was eyeballing. I hustled into the store assuming I could fill out the paperwork, get delayed and pick it up later this week. I was trading in, so I was up front with the staff..."I'm going to get delayed, so let's do the paperwork, I'll leave the trade-in here and pay now so I can just stop in later this week."
Much to my surprise, they ran me...and I got the instant approval!!!!
I've never heard of anyone going from the perpetually delayed list to the 'go ahead we can trust this guy' list before. twas my ucky day, I walked out with the new piece 5 min later!!!!!
Wow! The guy who caused your delays must've croaked or something.
Wish the a-hole who holds up my transactions would do the same!
Congrats!
Had the exact same scenario play out recently.
Since August '11 I've bought ~dozen or so firearms or transfers thru dealers. All delayed, anywhere from 4 hours to 9 days to come back approved. During the 9 day endeavor my dealer released the guns to me before approval came back atleast. My last transfer/purchase was an STI 2011 .40s&w I bought from a private party in Arizona, went to my dealer the day before it arrived assuming I'd get my delay per norm and since they last 3 days (I think). Instant approval! Damned gun was somewhere in MO at the time, had to go back the next day anyhow. D'oh!

damn!
which dealer do you use?
Gibson's guns for transfers/purchases and TMG Inc for transfers (more convenient to get to sometimes), both in King George/Dahlgren area.
Sounds like you should go buy some lottery tickets.
Get it while you can guys. I have a transfer on the way to my FFL. The day I go to get it I can promise you delays will jump to 30 days

That exactly what i said to the salesperson at the shop, "The other Mike XXXXXX with all the felonies must have moved to another state."
Interesting. I might have to go buy a gun to see if it works for me too.
Things at VSP have greatly improved over the last couple of months. I believe they've hired and trained more people to replace those that they lost over the holidays.
Delays that were getting up to 3 or four days are now coming back inside of half an hour sometimes.
I hope they can keep this up.
I only got delayed once, back in December, which was a shock as I had never had one before. Haven't had any delays since; dealer said it's possible someone just entered something wrong that one time.

I love this rationale. Might have to try it on the wife. "Honey, I only bought that Dan Wesson Valor to see if the last instant check was a fluke!"
