According to their facebook page, Colonial Shooting Academy will finally be open on April 3rd. So, who's going to be there on opening day?

I don't use TwitterBookPage. Are they having some sort of grand opening event, or something at a particular time, on April 3? I may come by.

Pre-registered members can shoot today. If I can find a babysitter I will hopefully be heading there shortly.

Edit: Got a babysitter!!!

Just got back. It was pretty nice. Really open lay out and lot's of parking available.

The Good:
The range is well lit and the AC actually works. I've never been to an indoor range that was below 90 degrees.
The mechanism that sends your targets downrange works pretty good. It's not one of those with a toggle switch you hold down until it get's where you want it.
They carry Wilson Combat, Nighthawk, Les Baer, and Ed Brown 1911's. Wilson combat was in stock and the rest still on order.
The rental gun selection is huge as far as handguns go. They also had 2 AR15's, a SCAR, and one more long gun but I can't remember what.
The selection of retail goods seems like it will be decent. They only had about 30-40% stocked at this point but the variety is good.
The safety course consisted of a 10 min video.

The bad:
No drawing from a holster.
Prices. Some prices were reasonable but some were insane. ex. $35.00 Glock mags. I didn't look around too much but I think Pmags were 14.95, Wilson Combat mags 32.95, M&P 9mm ranged from $510 all the way up 730ish if I remember correctly. It's almost like 2 different people set the prices. One that charges decent and one that prices things through the roof.
I understand it was opening day and they were busy but the registration staff weren't very friendly. Very short and kind of a don't speak unless spoken to attitude. On the other hand the two range officers I talked to were very friendly as well as all the staff at the gun counter.
If you get your monthly fee taken out of you account automatically there is a $3.00 fee per month. It brings your membership to almost $40.00 a month.
The dividers are not wide enough and if you shoot semi auto rifles all your brass will go down range. Sucks for reloaders.

When I got there it took about 45 mins to get registered. I got lucky though because range 1 had just filled up so me and one other person had range 2 to ourselves. He left about 10 minutes after I got there. My wife and I shot for a good 20-30 mins by ourselves.

On a side note I brought my AR and was getting set up when a handful of people came in. The AR I brought has a Surefire muzzle brake and it's LOUD inside. I don't know what it is and I've shot it indoors before but it was never that loud. The small lane dividers directed all the muzzle blast towards the other shooters which made everyone in there stop shooting. When I realized what was happening I packed up and left. Muzzle brakes and the dividers do not mix well.

Heh my experience was similar. Waited around for 30 minutes to get registered because there was only one computer and only one lady that knew how to do anything. Ammo prices were good enough that I don't have to worry about using my own stockpile. Range was extremely nice. The target berms let you punch in the exact distance in feet you want the target at. My AR was not obnoxiously loud but it only has a regular flash suppressor.

Hey guys, first time in a looong time since I've posted here.

I'm one of the assistant managers at CSA. I'd like to clear up some of the information.

We're in the middle of our soft opening, and that means we've been fighting a computer system as well as trying to put stock up. That's not an excuse if someone was short with you, and for that I apologize.

Pricing on Glock magazines is $29.95 for standard mags, and $34.95 for factory +2 extension magazines.

As far as holster use on the range, no, it's not permitted on the square ranges we have upstairs. The only range that will have holster use allowed is on the tactical range, and that will be open on certain days and at certain times. We'll also have IDPA here weekly.

Please understand this has been a monumental undertaking and we're doing our best. Bear with us and if you have any questions, don't hesitate to shoot me an email or come in the shop and ask me directly.

Thanks, and come by and say hey.

Dang Tim, it's great to hear you're working there. I don't think I've seen you since you left DeGoff's, at least not outside of running into you at a gun show or 2.

I popped in there today for 15 minutes or so. Good selection of Magpul stuff at the normal prices listed on the Magpul website. An entire corner of 5.11 stuff. The firearms retail area actually has a fair amount of stock, it just looks sparse because it's rather large. Handgun rentals appear to be $15 and they are still building up their fleet of rentals according to the lady behind the counter. They had several shoulder weapons for rent as well, including a suppressed MP5. Pelican cases, good quality ammo and cleaning supplies, a lot of Galco holsters, generally good quality products for sale.

I would think so. There's no rule against it in the Range Rules, and they appeared to have at least one subgun available at the rental counter.

Hey Tim, virtual hello, it's been too long.

Any details on the IDPA scheduling yet. I'd like to get the info on a google map I created, but of course you should post over on yahoo's vaidpa group. Day of week, time of day, match fee are primary info needed.

You are a great addition for them, I'll drop in some time to check it out.

Thanks guys, some days I feel like Al Paccino....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UPw-3e_pzqU

Answers.....

Non member lane rental is $20.00 per hour.

Full auto is indeed allowed. I've been shooting my Sterling Mk.4 and IMI Galil SAR pre-sample there, no worries.

Rifle calibers up to .30/06, just no steel core or AP rounds (no M855 or SS-109). Steel jacket is fine.

There is indeed a large selection of both rental and retail firearms, being built up every day. The panic buying is unfortunately hitting the distributors, lots of stuff is backordered and we're having to wait on delivery. I have a Daniel Defense V1 w/Eotech XPS-2, a S&W M&P 15MOE, a FN SCAR-L w/Eotech 517, a Springfield Armory M1A SOCOM, and a HK MP5A3 for rental.

Our grand opening is on the 24th of April, our soft opening for the general public started on Tuesday, so please bear with us as we are still working to get things 100%.

Hope that helps answer some questions.

Templar, do you guys have any M&P 9s for rental use? My dad is trying to decide between the G17 and the M&P 9.

I do, I even have one with a Crimson Trace attached to it. The Glock rentals are on the way but not in yet, but I do have M&P's, FN FNX's, and Walther PPQ's for rent. If someone is trying to decide on a firearm, they can try it out. If they decide to go with the same model they rented, we will refund the rental price towards the purchase.

I went down there last week and got my range membership taken care of. Ken gave me a tour of the facility and it is much larger than it appears. Very nice range set-up and the gun store is laid out well. They are not fully stocked yet, Ken said they were at about 40% stocked.

Templar; are you guys going to deal in used guns, trade ins, etc.? How about stripped AR lowers?

My dad, a couple buddies of mine, and I went in on Tuesday. Like others have said, the store isn't completely stocked yet but whats there looks good.

My only complaint was the paper target holder machine was too complicated for me.

I wish there were directions posted next to the controls but once we got it figured out it was great.

I'll see you there shortly.

I went by last night to complete my membership and get the credentials. However, I haven't shot yet. I believe I also saw the older guy who looks like Col. Sanders from the old days at DeGofffs working the floor.

I work near Henrico Doctors, and with being that close I'll be there frequently after work.

Source?

There was a news story the other day about some people who live nearby who didn't like hearing the muffled sounds of gunfire, and then Ed Coleman being interviewed saying that CSA was looking at some additional insulation to try to make them happier - but no allegations of any actual noise ordinance violation or any other issues.

I heard the fire department was there on Wednesday, but I did not find out what was going on. I was told that two fire trucks and a ladder truck were on site. I don't watch the local news so I can't confirm if there was a fire or not.

Hey guys.

No temporary shut down. The fire alarm was tripped by a guy with a post '86 dealer sample RPD belt fed that was doing burn outs.....we never closed.

Bimetal is just fine....just no steel core or penetrator ammo....so no M855 or SS109.

I'll be in the shop on Saturday from 9am to 5:30pm or so if you want to say hey.

So is that what set it off. I was in the show room shopping when it happened. I thought the electrician had clipped the wrong wire. Some of the guys around said it was one of the pull alarms that had set it off and they were trying to find out which one it was.

I did hear the FA being fired, that sound always gets me smiling and giggling

I signed up in advance for a corporate membership, and I've shot at CSA three times now. As indoor ranges go, it is about the best I could hope for. Incredibly clean and well ventilated and the lights and target carriers are great. They even sweep up your brass for you if you don't want it.

The no drawing from a holster thing is unfortunate. I understand they are crafting rules for new shooters, but there should be a two-tier system or something.

Weekly IDPA sounds like fun, especially if I can go on the way home from work.

As it is, I can now shoot during the week, instead of only the weekend when I can drive out to one of my gun clubs.

Keep up the good work.

Tony, we do have military and first responder discounts on most items.

Honestly, I don't have a lot to work with when it comes to discounting firearms, most are cut pretty close to the bone, but I'll do what I can on accessories, clothing, and Camelbak.

We're working on protocol for the tactical range and hopefully will have that up and running for members soon.

I'll be in Saturday and Sunday from 9am-6pm, and those same hours next week Monday through Friday if you guys want to come in and say hey.

Just show up. It's a short safety video and brief talk to make sure you're not an idiot. They will check your ammo if you don't buy theirs. Then its on to the range.

Range master will show you the ropes on how to operate the target rails. (select distance in feet and hit check button, for return select 0 and hit the check button again)
