I went to the one in Ashland today. Ive been there a few times before but I had never entered through the main entrance. At the main entrance today I saw a sign stating that all firearms must be unloaded and checked in at the front desk. The other entrance does not have the sign. I ignored the sign by the way. I just looked online and that is their corporate policy. What kind of crap is that ? I know its their property and all that but they sell guns , yet they dont want you bringing them in unless you check em in. Doesnt make sense to me.

That's what happens when lawyers and insurance companies (liability, similar to funshows) get involved

You're trying to make sense out of large corporate policies. Good luck. It's sort of like shopping centers who post rules about "no weapons, including knives, guns, imitation guns, etc." and then they have Dick's Sporting Goods as an anchor tenant, selling all sorts of those things you're not allowed to have at the mall, and usually some other stores selling knives. Explain that one to me.

As far as the comment about lawyers and insurance companies ... well, I'm a lawyer and I used to do tons of work for insurance companies, and you can guess what I think of those policies from my response above.

I know a mall in Washington PA that is that way. Has a big ass sign that says no weapons ect. and the biggest store is Gander Mountain on the end. Gander has a sign at the mall entrance, all firearms, knives, ect, must go in and out outside entrance

There is some level of consensus to indicate that that signage refers to guns brought into the store for work, not those carried for self-defense.

So, if you're bringing in a gun to be repaired by their gunsmith, make sure it is unloaded and check it in at the front desk. This is a problem?

no problem at all. Its that I didnt see anything on the sign stating the concealed carry is excluded from the rule.

Right, the signs don't specify. As a result, many people have contacted Bass Pro, and apparently the signage is not intended to address guns carried for self-defense (per the link).

They don't make it too clear. But I've open carried in there quite a few times with never an issue. And if I'm not mistaken, GlockSargent still holds some of his training classes there.

I assume it's just like the signage at Gander Mountain. They have the same blurb up, but have a seperate sign up beneath it saying that folks who are carrying a firearm in accordance with state laws are exempt. The rule only applies to weapons being brought to the firearms section for sale or repair.

While I can't speak for Bass Pro, as the firearms instructor who teaches the only approved classes there, I can explain the policy.

If you are OC'ing or carrying concealed with a permit, that is fine. You do not have to check your gun. The policy of checking your firearm is a corporate policy relating to guns that were purchased there and are being returned, exchanged or repaired. I have spoken to the store manager about the confusion in the poorly worded sign and the response was that it was a corporate sign used in all stores, and that a change would have to come from corporate.

People OC without hassle. It makes sense to ask for firearms needing repair to be unloaded.
