Has anybody recently done what supposedly can be done and renewed their Clark County CCW permit early (to take advantage of the background check exemption)?

Some of the guys have stated that they are not letting people renew early. This was about 2 weeks ago. Not sure if they are letting anyone do it now.

Yah, that's why I asked. I called the CCW detail and was told they would do it.

I believe it depends on how early. Six months or so, probably not a problem, a year or three, they're likely to make you wait. I'm waiting for mine to come in. Tomorrow is four weeks.

AFAIK...
The earliest LVMPD will allow you to renew is 90 days before your CFP expires.

Then you run the risk of not getting a new date on it, I would guess, which is the whole point

You will not get a new date on it. If had to add guns to mine before and they kept the initial issue date.

Can you surrender your current license and apply for a new one?
