Fing around in WI. .300 Black and friends.
Awesome. I've been contemplating a bigger caliber upper for deer hunting. I'm intrigued.
Questions, if I may:
Will a .300 Blackout upper fit a standard lower? I've got several already... Armalite, DPMS, RRA. (I think that's a yes... just want to be sure).
Standard buffer? Rifle or carbine make a differance (got both)?
Standard 5.56 magazines, or special ones needed?
Who makes ammo, or can I buy brass & reloading dies?
What's the bullet weights available and is bullet diameter a true .308, or .311 like an AK/SKS? (Bullet in top photo looks like a Hornady SST, is it?).
I'll answer what I know for sure out of those questions.
Yes a .300 Blackout upper fits a standard lower. Standard upper works also, you just need a new bolt & barrel. So you can convert from a full 5.56 gun pretty easily.
No idea what buffer is recommended.
5.56 mags are good to go.
Remington makes ammo, I'm sure plenty others do also. There is definitely reloading equipment for it, I'm pretty sure you can use old 5.56 to make .300 Blackout.
I think bullet weights were around 120gr, not really sure. It is a .308 bullet though, for sure.

Thanks. That's pretty much what I needed to know. I contemplated .50 Beowulf, .458 Socom, 6.8 SPC, but all those require new magazines AFAIK, and ammo's not commonplace, and is expensive. I've got about 40 5.56 magazines now... a few 10 rnds, a few 20 rnds, but mostly 30 rnds. I see no need to buy any "special" ones. And I'd go with a complete dedicated upper for "switchability" purposes. Buffers & springs are easy to switch also, if needed.
Looks like I got a new project.

Thanks for the help! I have been duracoating up a storm today. (Bad Weather)
The best buffer is for sure a regular CAR one. H anything is asking for problems.
The ammo is all reloads here. Mostly 110 VMAX and 147gr ball. It likes the hotter light loads better.
The ammo is pretty cheap. We (WI57 and I) just milled down a dillon head and we trim regular 5.56 brass back and size it. Happens all on one machine.
The 125 Sierra's shoot really well too. Same thing though loaded HOT.
This gun likes the 125's and the Red bbl one likes the Hornady 110's better. Who knows why. Same BBL's. [/b]
Nice job man, keep the videos coming.
Nice handguards too btw.

I have a 6.5 Grendel in the works. Still unsure on what tube to put on it.

I know where there is a good deal on a DD 7.0 Omega...

7.0 is for sissy's. Anything less than 10" makes me feel inadequate.

How does the .300 blk compare to 6.8mm past 100 yards? I would have to guess .300 drops a lot faster.
And what is the difference between .300 blackout and .300 whisper? I have to assume it is the 6.8mm vs. 6.5mm all over again.
Neat idea though.

.300 whisper is the same just more expensive to load.
And 6.8 spc would whoop the shit out my .300 BLK. IMO
But it is just something different to play with.
Found this this morning while searching for something else. Savage Arms intended to chamber a rifle in .300 AAC Blackout, but cancelled their project due to poor accuracy results with the heavier bullet, sub-sonic loads. You can read more at their website's front page.

458 socom uses standard AR mags. in the 20 rounders you get 7 rounds of 458 and in the 30 rounders you get 11 rounds of 458.
