What fun things can I do in the Estes Park area this time of year?

Wife and I are going to be in Estes from the 23rd through the 1st.

As usual, we'll be spending some time in RMNP. We're going to catch Megadeth at the Fillmore the 28th. Outside of that, though, we're looking for new things to try.

Part of this trip involves looking for housing - we're hoping to move out there this summer so she can go to grad school. But it's mostly about fun.

We're driving from KC so a car is available and I'm not against driving to do fun stuff.

If you wanna get togather and do some shooting let me know. I will show you one of the local shooting spots, in pawnee.

The Spyderco factory is in Golden and Coors tour is cool also. If you come in to loveland Jensen arms is worth a stop. Hammonds candys in north denver is cool and celestial seasons(tea company) is in boulder. The budweiser factory is in FT Collins along with new belguim and Oll dell if you guys drink. Shoot me an IM I could go on for days.

I might have to take you up on that! I will probably be bringing a handgun or two, a couple cans, and maybe my CA94 SBR.

Ice fishing! Visit the little cool shops downtown. And grab a good buffalo burger at Grubsteak. Maybe even try to book a night at the famous Stanley Hotel or YMCA.

Ice fishing...hadn't thought of that one!

I think snow shoeing is on the list too, possibly a snow shoe hike to Mills Lake. One of our favorite places.

The shops are always good too. Can't wait to hit the Wapiti Pub on the main strip.

Estes Park is an awesome place to visit/live. The downtown shopping is open all year. Good places to eat as well. For Italian food I recommend Momma Roses which is downtown and the Dunraven Inn (not the one downtown) which is located going towards YMCA of the Rockies (make sure you call ahead for reservations) and for two people expect around $50 to $75 depending on drinks. Nicky's is a popular spot but I have eaten there twice and both times it was bad so I personally don't recommend them. For a great steak place, the Twin Owls Steak place is awsome. For mexican food, my favorite is Grumpy Gringo's. The Stanley Hotel has a great Sunday Brunch but call ahead for reservations. Enough on the food....

There is plenty of hiking and snow shoeing you can do this time of year. Plenty of wildlife to view. You don't have to go far to see the Elk as they are all over the place. Along Fall River Road you will see deer, mountain goats sometimes and plenty of Elk. The town of Blackhawk and Central City is about an hour's drive south of Estes Park and has gambling there. I think they are up to a $100 max bet.

Lot's of stuff to do. You can fly fish below the dam and Kirk's fly shop guides and has rental equipment. Many of the condo's have snow shoes as well to use for no charge so check where you are staying.

Have fun.

Oooh yeah, I forgot about Momma Roses! I think we ate there when we were in Estes on our honeymoon.

I will have to try the Twin Owls too. I'm always up for a good steak!

I remember when we were there in August '09 for our honeymoon, the elk were abundant!. I got yelled at by a park ranger when I tried to pet one in RMNP.

I wish old Fall River Road was open this early in the season. That's one of my favorite drives.

Thanks for the tips!

Have fun while you are here andrasik! Looks like some good ideas already posted. A day out at pawnee turning money into noise (or silence as it were) sounds like a good time.

Oh, and it's Odell's by the way. Not Ol dells.

Went snowshoeing a couple days ago. Instead of going to Mills lake, we went to Loch Vale, pretty cool. It was really crowded on a Saturday. Don't forget to drink water, even if you don't think you need to. Start fairly early (not 2pm) if you want to actually make it.

Grandma's Mountain Cookies downtown is awesome.

There were 2 huge Elk right by the snowshoe rental place, with huge racks, just chilling. Created a small traffic jam. Weather was beautiful and there was barely enough snow in some parts to go snowshoeing, but there was enough. I think it cost $10 to rent snowshoes from "the warming hut". Nice guys.
