Moving back to MI soon, question about WA CPL
Alright guys, Im getting out of the service in about an month and a half, and Im moving back to Michigan and have a question about my WA CPL.
On the Washington State office of the Attorney General's site, it says that a WA CPL will be recognized in Michigan, but there is an asterik.
Michigan*
* These states do not recognize non-resident concealed pistol licenses issued by Washington state.
Now, Ive been hazy on the residency thing, since Im still a resident of MI, (I assume) but I have military orders stationing me at JBLM, here in WA. My CPL doesnt say anything about non resident. My question is, how long legally will I be able to carry with my WA CPL in Michigan. My WA CPL is good for 5 years, but obviously the address on it wont be current, as Ill be back in MI.
Any input will be greatly appreciated, thanks guys.
Hello,
Multi-state CCW is of interest to me, so I did a little looking...
"(8) An individual who is not a resident of this state is not required to obtain a license under this section if
all of the following conditions apply:
(a) The individual is licensed in his or her state of residence to purchase, carry, or transport a pistol.
(b) The individual is in possession of the license described in subdivision (a).
(c) The individual is the owner of the pistol he or she possesses, carries, or transports.
(d) The individual possesses the pistol for a lawful purpose as that term is defined in section 231a of the
Michigan penal code, 1931 PA 328, MCL 750.231a.
(e) The individual is in this state for a period of 180 days or less and does not intend to establish residency
in this state."
Technically no, however it looks like it would not be a problem with your WA ID/DL and WA CPL for up to 180 days as long as you are ok verifying that you are in Michigan temporarily and that the WA address is current. I don't know the particulars of your scenario are to answer that. I also don't know how local iLE in Michigan are, or if they would even ask. I would think (hope) that leeway is given to military personnel regarding residency..
BTW, Michigan's AG website is an awesome resource: http://www.michigan.gov/msp/0,1607,7-123-1591_3503_4654––-,00.html
Not sure if this helps, but if you have orders to be in WA, you are effectively a WA resident. From what I know, the WA CPL is recognized in MI.

I agree, but he said that he is getting out of the service...
