Buying property and shooting on private land

Coming from TX and attending grad school in WA for the past year. My wife and I are flirting with the idea of just staying here and raising a family once I finish school. I have always dreamed of living on 15 to 30 acres where I could freely go out and shoot whenever I felt like it without getting into any trouble.

Can any of you guys direct me to the laws concerning shooting on your own private property? If you guys could also point me to an area where land is affordable willing to spend up 200,000 for a piece of property where I can build a house and not live to far out of a major city.

Thanks,

C

Not going to happen. You will need to live on the dry side of the mountains (Eastern WA) or at least 1.5-2 hours from a major city on the wet side (Western WA).

Shooting ordinances vary by location to location. Mostly at the county level.
They mainly restrict shooting away from areas that have increasingly dense population... so the problem is, no matter what you buy, eventually, you run the risk that people will encroach on your slice of heaven or you may simply get lumped into a "zone". You can usually ask for a grandfathering or exemption but you have to be very pro-active and also have to hope you're not fighting a stacked-deck of politicians.

The farther away from PDX or SEA the better.

Yer better off on the eastside if that sorta activity is what you want. I know one fellow in Enumclaw who shoots on his land, but its probably illegal even though his neighbors are OK with it.

I live in Snohomish county.
I shoot out in my back yard all the time.
So do at least 3 neighbors in the immediate vicinity.
I'm about an hour from Seattle proper, but I'm in the northern suburbs in 15-20 minutes.

The key is to stay in the county jusrisdiction.

Sorry.
Classic rookie transplant mistake.
Damn.

Ahem..
Forget everthing I said, there's nothing available here on the wet side, you gotta go far, far east.
Maybe even Idaho or Montanna.

Now I gotta post a pic of a topless girl so this thread gets deleted.

A buddy of mine used to live on the Tulalip res, we would go shooting in his backyard once or twice a week. Also, my girlfriend's parents live northeast of Monroe and we shoot out there a few times a year. They say they hear gunshots every day and nobody complains

This.

Basicly it boils down to your not going to find that on the West side of the State from Olympia to Everett.

Looks like I might have to settle for buying a home on the west side, but then buy some recreational land on the east side. Being from TX and hunting down there, long drives is something we all do down there.

If you can't piss and shoot off your deck - it isn't a home...

31 acres north of Spokane in Steven's County... I shoot all the time... I rest comfortable knowing my neighbors shoot as much as I do...

Good luck...

If I had my way, I'd live 30 miles further east in the motherland (Idaho)... The air in Idaho smells much better. The East side is better than nothing, but, unfortunately you can still smell the stench of Olympia from here... It’s amazing what 30 miles will do...

Texas transplants welcome here...

Yeah - the last bastion of political common sense... Having a (D) after your title in Idaho, just makes you a target... I love it... Too many fucking (D)'s in this fucked up state. I have great, like minded neighbors, a nice chunk of land in a good community, but the fucking stench of Olympia makes me sick to my stomach. Gregwhore - fuck your Discover Pass. $30.00 buys me about 4 mags full of 55gr... Money better spent.... Every Sept I'm reminded how fucked up WA is, when I head to the woods for my annual pilgrimage... Have you ever tried to hunt elk in this fucked up state? It seems even the Elk are smart enough not to cross the border...

The Motherland - Aaaahhhh... I hear ya brother... I hear ya...

You can get acreage out in Eatonville area. That is around an hour from Tacoma or Olympia.
