What's the shelf-life of alcoholic beverages?

How long is booze good for after it's been opened?
How 'bout if it hasn't been opened?

I went up to help Mom store some bottled water.
The cupboard I was to place it in had a varied assortment of alcoholic beverages that have been sitting untouched for just over 10 YEARS.
Just sitting there since my Step-Dad passed away in 2000. Mom's not a drinker...
So, she says, "Load it up and take it home. Just be careful with it, Son." "OK, Mom!"

There's everything from unopened Kahlua & Rum to Cognac to Amaretto to OUZO.
I popped the cap on the Jose Cuervo and it smelled like an illegal's feet...

I need the smart-ass wisdom of the WAHTF before I find myself in the hospital with alcoholic neuropathy or something.

It's very dangerous to have that.

You'll need to turn it over to a moderator in Ballard for proper and safe disposal.

I don’t drink alcohol either (a beer once in a great while) and we only keep ‘Whisky and/or Scotch’ in the house for ‘medicinal purposes’ for a Hot Tottie; and most of what we have in the cabinet, has been there for at least ten-years; if not longer.

When I moved into this house, it came with a stocked liquor cabinet of late 70s, early 80s booze. I promptly threw all the opened stuff away, but we kept the unopened.

The cognac, vodka, gin, everclear, and scotch kept well.

The fruity rum, cheap whiskey, and schnapps didn't fare as well.

The other alcohols I don't specifically remember one way or the other.

Most simple (Bourbon, Vodka, Gin ect) alcohol over 45% ABV or 90 proof will not go "Bad". Alcohol is a preservative.

It's the flavored stuff, lower ABV stuff, things like Kahlua, or wine based stuff that'll turn due to the additives.

The Cuervo prolly smelled like Jose's feet when it was opened.
Out of curiousity, what was there any Jack Daniels and what was the percentage....IIRC they've lowered it over the years in the intrest of higher profits.

Found an old stash my parents had for friends when I was 18.

Jim Beam, forgot how long it was aged. Think 10-12 year. Bottle was from the 80's. I found it in '99.

My Dad was still making "lemon, honey, and whisky" cough medicine 20 years after bought a house that had several hundred bottles of stuff in the basement bar. It was ALL good expensive stuff too. As far as I know, he never got sicker then he already was drinking it.

Coolest house we ever lived in, it was built in 1912 by the owner of the company I work for and had a secret wall that swung out if you knew how to reveal a safe to hide valuables.
