Wanted: Recommendation for 1911 'smith Montgomery County PA

I have a Combat Commander that lives a life of so-so reliability. I had it out today and experienced FTE and FTF multiple times. I find it extremely frustrating. Heading off the question, the gun was clean when I started shooting factory ammo. I experienced the first failure at approximately the 15th round.

Can you recommend a gunsmith or very skilled hobbyist around the Montgomery County area? I'd like to have him/her go through the gun to improve reliability and to do some enhancements (grip checkering and other). If I like the work, I have another full-size Springfield Mil-Spec that I'd like completely worked.

Thanks.
Jeff

Jeff,

George (EGW) is arguebly the best .45 smith in the Counrty.

Unless things recently changed, EGW does not offer smith work anymore. Their smith struck out on his own, not sure where.

I coulda sworn that EGW was next to Dave Donley's old shop in Quakertown, which technically is not Montco but should be close enough.

Edit: choice #2 would be John Robinson at Classic Pistol, which is in Bucks County.

Don't know WHERE the shop is, but there's no gunsmithing listed. They make great PARTS for 1911's, have several in mine.

I visited Dave Donley today. Dave looked it over pretty closely, confirmed function and assessed overall condition. He made a couple recommendations and sent the gun home with me to run some more rounds through it to assess function. I appreciate Dave's honesty and time. I will return to see him again (maybe soon!) for some items I noticed in his shop.

Gary - thanks for the call / recommendation.

Dave D - thank you for the assistance today!

Have a great day.

I'm pretty sure George still owns & operates EGW, he is just focusing on manufacturing rather than gunsmithing

I do not believe that EGW offers gunsmith service anymore.

Randy Hallowbush at The Handgunner in Topton does some good work on 1911s.

No pics or website.
However; feel free to stop by the gun smithy, have a look around and quiz me. Examples of my work do not stay here very long but there might be something on the rack when you come in.
I have several examples of 1911 work that are used and carried by me, daily. I will happily trot them out for you to see.
