For Couch Commando re: Deer Slugs

Today myself, DualShooter, and Alphabravo went to Rio Salado. We all shot sporting clays and then went to lunch.

Alphabravo had to go home, but DualShooter and me headed back to Rio for some main range action. I brought a smoothbore 12 ga. 20" iron sighted Rem-Choked 870 with me, along with a box of 25 Brenneke short mag full bore foster style slugs.

The mission: Kill 12" inch 200 steel plates with this "short range" combo.

Out of the 20 shots we took at 200, I bet at least 15 of them rang the plate. The ones that missed were pubic hair close. The coolest part about it was that through my 10x Zeiss binoculars, you could literally see the slug flying the whole way to the target and becoming more destabilized the further out it got. We even had two of the range officers come over and watch and the response was a unanimous "Ha....no shit..."

300 yards was a no go. The slugs were so destabilized by that point that they were all over the road.

So there you go...head east young man, and shoot with confidence. Here's one I shot at 140 yards through the woods with that same gun and load. I was 20 feet in the air and resting the gun against the side of a tree. The Brenneke went through the whole deer from stem to stern and kept on trucking.

Cool. Either way I'm probably going to need a new shotgun or at least new sights. I can't hit anything slug related with the bead sight on my 870. I am pretty good out to at least 50 with ghost rings or rifle sights (based on 3-gun experience on IPSC targets). I'll likely do what someone in that thread suggested and just keep hunting with muzzle loaders. I can easily hit a deer sized target at 200 with my nice remington 700ML and have pushed it beyond 250.

Truth, this man speaks it.

I was able to hit the thing several times right handed (I'm a lefty). I've actually shot at a large target with Rem 3" xtra velocity slugs out of the same type setup and make hits at about 260 yds.

I used to snipe them at ridiculous ranges with my Encore. Sit on the edge of a field and have a cigar, waiting for the last three minutes of legal shooting time.

Thanks for showing the ropes on the sporting clay course. I'm pretty sure I'm going to be out a lot of money in the future, now that I've played with some quality hardware...

I saw some left handed M2s going for $1249 retail. Ouch. Until then, you can borrow my Benelli or Leftie 11-87 anytime we hit the range.

Also found this - http://www.browning.com/customerservice/partsandservice/servicecenters/index.asp

I have had *horrendous* service and experience from at least three approved vendors on this list. Let me dig a little deeper and I'll find the right guy and get you an estimate.

If you ever want to sell that Hydraulic MEC press, let me know and I'll point you in a direction where you can get top dollar out of it. Shipping is a bitch on those things, though.

Sorry, our buddy with the Kel-Tec next to us kinda frazzled my nerves and I forgot. Or maybe it was just my way of ensuring we shoot that course again soon...you'll never know.

Yeah...kel tec guy scared the shit out of me.

And yeah....I look like a lobster too.

My wife quickly figured out that I didn't spend the day at work. Funny thing was I went to that dinner tonight and half the people had just come from a golf tourney and looked just like me.

What length barrel do I want on my M2 oh guru of the shotgun?

26" with a set of extended choke tubes is what you shot today. It's easier to replace a damaged $40 choke than it is to repair a boogered up end of $450 barrel. 28" would be fine too.

You'll spend less time in the car going the Ben Avery, but you'll spend an additional $20 on targets and you almost have to rent a golf cart especially if it's hot. Plus the scenery sucks. I've run into nice people there, but Rio is the friendliest place around.

Wait till the post partum kicks in and we'll plan another weekday escape.

For all of you wanting to try this out with 7M3, please be warned that you WILL get addicted. I shot the course with him yesterday and today I found myself at Sportsman's Warehouse 5 minutes before they close holding a way overpriced Benelli M2 with a raging boner. Thank goodness the other people there didn't know how to fill out a 4473 in a timely manner. They saved me a lot of money.

Is this at rio salado sportsman club ?

A positive attitude, be safety minded, and a willingness to make an ass of yourself missing lots of targets is all that is needed.

If it makes you feel better, I'll shoot a pump too. I even had to break a few crossing targets shooting left handed to prove a point to the mildly Autistic south paws that came with me this time. But I still miss my share of targets, too, as they can attest too.

I'll shoot the whole course right handed next time if you remind me. Just don't stand so close behind me while I'm shooting. That grin on your face is...worrysome.

the heat may affect one of those things ..

The ass making of self happens regularly though..

When are you planning on going out again ?

also what does it cost, what shells are recomended, bring lunch /water ? etc ?
SevenMaryThree  [Team Member]

100 targets / $20. Shells are $5.47 at Wal Mart. You need 5 boxes. They provide water at the stations. Lunch is at Subway down the street.

Plan on 2-3 hours worth of socializing and shooting.

Up until this week I was there 2x a week and shooting 500 rounds a week, 20-24K targets per year. BUT....I've got a couple of bird dog pups getting delivered 0n 5/5 and that is going to take up a lot of my discretionary recreational time. I will still make it out at least once a month....who am I kidding, probably more.

i have one dog that i think would make a good bird dog, she might be to old now though to train

Its my birthday near the end of the month so i might not be in town just depends on circumstances though..

Probably bring back my shotgun though

I have plenty of shells, just depends on type, i have some steel for restricted hunting, as well as lead for cheap shooting of clay's with a hand thrower. All the way to buck and slugs..Probably have 15-20 different types of 12 gauge shot

SevenMaryThree  [Team Member]

Shells need to be 2 3/4" either 7 1/2 or 8 shot. 1 or 1 1/8th oz. 3 dram max.

Wal Mart sells Federal Top Guns or Winchester Universals that work fine. No hunting loads. They create issues with shot falling in places where it shouldn't.

Couch will be drunk for at least three days after graduation.

When I go dove hunting, I generally shoot 5 to 10 percent. JeredMD shoots 25 to 50 percent. One of my big issues is depth perception. I can't judge distances well at all. That's even an issue when I'm driving; I'm the asshole who doesn't make the right turn when it is perfectly reasonable to do so because I can't tell how far away the oncoming traffic is.

The other problem is probably technique.

You might be closing one eye without knowing it, or might be cross eye dominant.

I can have you shooting 50% in no time. My best run on doves was close to 120 straight and we don't cherry pick the easy ones. Shooting them to 40-60 yards will actually give the dogs something to do.

slanky...we were breaking targets with a Saiga that shot no where near point of aim and had a really spotty pattern. It's rocket science to an extent but no where near impossible.

Let me know a week or two in advanced so I can go back to my parents house to get a suitable shotgun. Currently the only shotgun in my possession is a remington 870 police with a 20'' cylinder bore and a mag extension.

So my only shotgun currently is an 870P with a 20'' cylinder bore and a 7 round mag tube.

I know this is not exactly ideal, but I think it will point alright if I were to buy a standard end cap/mag spring. Just how shitty will a cylinder bore 20'' be for skeet? At least it has a bead front sight.

cylinder is one step looser than a skeet choke so you should be ok... Keep in mind You can break any target with any choke dont let it psyche you out. Ive seen 40 yards crossers broken with cylinder chokes.
