Hammer on a loaded chamber?

He should be charged with endangerment.

As much as I like single action revolvers, I would not carry one for self defense.

I would expect the same to happen to me if I discharged my firearm in public outside of self defense.

Sounds like a pre-transfer bar revolver loaded to capacity and then dropped.

He deserves a charge.

Exactly.

Had he an empty chamber under the hammer, nothing would have happened. Or if he had it retro-fitted for the transfer bar that would make it safe to carry fully loaded, again nothing would happen.

I know a lot of purists don't want the transfer bar installed on their Old Model Rugers because it affects the collectible value of the gun. But if you are going to carry it, carry it right! Five rounds in the cylinder and the empty chamber under the hammer!!

I go to that particular Walmart frequently and this really ticks me off!!!!

he should lose his badge for that. only a corrupt department would let someone keep their badge after that.

I agree that charges are in order. We don't just have rights we also have responsibilities to exercise our rights in a manner that does not needlessly put others are risk of harm from our actions. I wouldn't carry a SA for self defense in part because I don't want to take on that extra responsibility when much more practical options are available to me.

Weren't we just talking about this in another thread? The Ruger Blackhawk is one of the only guns I know that isn't drop friendly. I have personally seen one dropped less then a foot and a half and it went off.

Who takes shits at walmart? Gross. Good way to catch herpes.

If you know how to load it, it's not a problem.... Load one, skip one, load four and pull the hammer ALL the way back, set the hammer down on an EMPTY chamber... No problem. Only an idiot loads all six chambers on a non-transfer bar revolver...

You can't get herpes from a toilet seat, but I still try to avoid public bathrooms to keep from getting shot by dudes handling firearms in the stall next to me.

Nothing like sitting on a toilet and hearing a slide getting manipulated in the stall next to you . . . . it makes the poop come out faster, let me tell ya.

Was this a Blackhawk made prior to 1973 that you saw discharge? Was it dropped muzzle up or down? Post 1973 models incorporate a transfer bar safety, so dropping a post 73 Blackhawk on the hammer will not fire it unless there's been a failure of the transfer bar system.

But, since the transfer bar only prevents the hammer from hitting firing pin, not the firing pin from hitting the primer, the question is "Will dropping it on the muzzle impart enough forward momentum to the firing pin to cause it to ignite the primer?". My bet is no. The firing pin in a revolver is very light and IMO just doesn't have enough weight or mass to indent the firing pin from a drop on the muzzle.

For the record, I own several Blackhawks, both with and without the transfer bar.

I don't know what model it was. A guy was grabbin a sweater from the back of his car and he forgot the sweater had the gun sitting on it. When he pulled on the sweater the gun fell from the floor of the car to the curb and it was a really low car so it didnt fall far at all. Then I saw the flash. Luckily the round just hit a decorative pile of rocks a few feet away.

Still know the guy. He just got divorced for the second time lol.
