Long range / Varmint guys. What barrel do you use?

I'd like to buy a new .223 barrel but I'm not sure what to get. I don't mind dropping the $$$ but only want to do it once.

This rifle will be used for a varmint gun and to a lesser degree a bench gun. I'd love to put down a woodchuck or coyote at 600 yds if I do my part.

1. Weight is a concern, I'd like to keep it moderately light.
2. Prefer a stainless barrel
3. Is an 18" barrel long enough? Do I need 20"?
4. What twist rate 1/7 or 1/8?
5. I have a Nikon 4.5-14 BDC scope to put on this barrel. Is it good enough to kill a woodchuck at 500 yds?

I'm really open to consider almost anything. Many of the spr type barrels I see from vendors are out of stock. Might take a while to get one anyway.

What if a barrel came up for sale used? How do I minimize the risk of buying a trashed barrel?

Fire away with any questions. I'd like to get this figured out.

Thanks

I would buy a spikes tactical 18 in barrel (made by lothar walther), a 18 in noveske spr barrel or a 18 in rainier match barrel. All are in stock at rainier and spikes and at prices ranging from 250-450 and guaranteed sub 1 in groups.

As far as twist rate I think either would be fine but could be a little better determined by knowing what grain round you plan on using.

Also there are a lot better places to ask this question than the hometown forum.

18 inch White Oak would be a nice choice.

The scope you have will do fine as long as you know it's operation and your actual drop.

Really anything between 1/7 to 1/9 will be fine just depends on what bullet you intend to shoot.

Shilen SS Match Grade Select 28" 1-14 twist .22-250 Ackley Improved.
Too long/heavy to shoot off-hand but velocity is just under 4K fps and far zero is just under 300 yards.
Hand load w/VMax turns groundhogs inside out.
Prolly not the answer you were looking for but an op to show off my varmint rig.

I appreciate the input guys. As mentioned most of the barrels are back in stock. Better not waste too much time making up my mind.

Thanks

This or one of Rock River's models is what I plan on getting at some point if this Colt HBAR upper I'm building doesn't work out like I hope.

Depending upon your expectations the Hbar Colt will do well.

I hope so. I'm mainly building it up for wacking varmints, however I will likely use it for some high power clinics at the club as well.

It's the HBAR with no muzzle device (or bayo lug), and from the markings looks to be a Non chrome-lined barrel; which from my understanding will help with accuracy.

All I need to do is stake the gas key on the BCG, install the hooded rear aperture in my carry handle, and she's shooting. It's also free-floated using an Armalite NM tube under standard hand guards.

Do you have a removable carry handle?

I put a 16" RRA predator upper on a PlumCrazy lower as a light weight rig for my son to use for Yote's, hog's and such....I like this upper so much that I am going to screw together a 20" for a lower I have stashed away for myself.
The factory RRA barrel eats everything I have loaded for it so far from 40gr-60gr vmax and even 69gr sierra matchkings.

I have an ADCO build (AR15), and I went w/ a 20in wilson 1/8 on a Rock River upper and lower. I use it for everything, and it's very effective. It's a stainless barrel that has almost 2.5k through it. If I do my part, I'm about .5 MOA with a 69 SMK. I also loaded up a ton of 60gr Vmax that are just as accurate, cheap, and do miracles on groundhogs and yotes.

FYI: Rock River 2 stage match triggers go away at about 2.5K. Rock River will make it right.

I wondered about ADCO barrels. Don't see any in stock though.

Wonder what the lead time is?
