Out of curiosity I Googled "Man who cared trains out of Ivory" and found a website to the Warther Museum in Dover.

www.warthers.com

Ernest "Mooney" Warther was a talented carver and knife-maker who carved scaled model locomotives out of walnut, ivory and other materials. His work is exquisite and is historically correct right down to the last rivet.

I met Mooney as a child and am pleased to hear that his extended family still maintains the museum. They also manufacture world-class cutlery.

Its been many years since I've been there but it was an awesome place to visit. If anyone that hasn't been there gets a chance to stop and check it out it is like two minutes from the highway at the Dover exit.

Not in NW Ohio. I was there as a little kid. Pretty cool place. There's a miniature working factory of some sort, IIRC.

More SE/central but you are right, his work is stunning. We were there last year and after the tour we bought a set of steak knives. They are the sharpest knives I have ever used for steaks. They seem to cut without any effort

The trains that he carved are nothing less than amazing.

There is, and it has moving parts as well.

Mr. Warther had no formal art training nor formal carving skills. According to his son he had a 2nd grade education.

My parents made it a point to take my brother and I to as many Ohio parks, museums, festivals and places of historical and cultural interest as they could.

Among them:

COSI (in its original location)
Gnadenhutten park and museum
Malabar Farms
Kingwood Center
Ohio Historical Museum
Circleville Pumpkin festival
Sugarcreek Swiss Cheese Festival
Air Force Museum (Wright-Patterson AFB)

...too many state parks to list.

One place I always tried to find again was some sort of museum in Coshocton. They had on display a an amazing collection of Samurai armor and swords. A Google search turned up the Johnson-Humrickhouse museum across the Muskingum river in Rosco Village (another cool place to go).
