i originally took the class in 2005 my license expired sep. 2009 wasnt really carrying much at the time and had financial issues (no excuse i know) but i was just wondering if anyone who is versed in the subject knew what i would have to do to renew it. do i need to take the whole course over or just do the recertification that looks to be 2 hours or so on 1 day instead of trying to squeeze in the 12 hours over 2 days. thanks in advance for your help

If your license has expired, I believe you have to start over. I don't think you can renew an expired license

I think your class certificate is good for 10yrs, so i would think you could renew it ??

Here is the quoted material straight out of the CCW Handbook from the Ohio AG.

"In order to renew your license for the first time, you must submit proof of competency certification. Proof of certification may take either of the following forms:

1. A previously issued Ohio concealed carry license. The license may beeither expired or currently valid.
2. A competency certificate from your instructor.

There is no longer a time limit from the day you completed your class to the time of your first renewal. If you have previously renewed your license and are renewing for a second time, you need to present proof of renewed competency certification. Therenewed competency certification must attest that you are range competent. To obtain a renewed competency certification, you do not need to attend the entire course, class, or program that you initially took to obtain your license. The renewed competency certification must be dated and signed by an instructor. It must attest that you are range competent."

Now this is for a renewal so if your license is expired I think you may have to start over. But I couldn't find any info regarding how long your original training certificate was good for. You may be able to just reapply with the same certificate. A call to the local SO wouldn't hurt to check!

No one has come up for a "second renewal" as yet.

From Ohio CCW.org~

Renewal of a CHL is very similar to the original application process. You must fill out a new application, provide fingerprints, and pay the required license fee.

You must submit proof of competency certification, such as:

A previously issued Ohio concealed carry license. The license may be either expired or currently valid.
A competency certificate from your instructor. There is no longer a time limit from the day you completed your class to the time of your first renewal.

For subsequent renewals, you need to present proof of renewed competency certification. The renewed competency certification must attest that you are range competent. You do not need to get renewed certification from the same instructor who gave you your initial certification.

End cut & paste.

Certificate is good for 3 years to apply for CHL / 6 years for renewal purposes.
1st renewal is simple pay the fee. The 2nd renewal I believe you need a new competency certificate which means re-taking the class.

2d renewal requirement is completely vague. Pretty sure there was no legislative intention to take that horrible 12 hour class again.

But since no one needs to worry about this until 2013 I ain't panicking.

The 2nd renewal takes you past your "certificate of proficiency" window if its still valid for 6 years.
If your cert is valid for 6 years then you re-take the course if its expired.

I am up for my 2nd renewal and decided to just take the NRA certified instructor course over doing the standard CHL class. As a certified instructor I should be good for "life" as long as I keep my instructor rating and I can give the course to others as needed. I did not want to sit though the basic class again so I decided to spend a little extra time and money and become a certified instructor.

I agree that going through the entire basic course again is punishment in itself but unless the law changes its a necessary evil.
