Ohio State Parks (Mohican)
I am planning a family vacation to Cedar Point in June. I would like to stop at Mohican for three days to camp, take my daughter canoeing and hit up Amish country. It would appear that Ohio does not let you reserve the tent camping areas. Is this true? If they are first come first serve, how scarce are the tent sites? The site for Mohican only listed 10 sites in the Non-electric class A camping. I would hate to get there and be SOL on a campsite.
Thanks for any info you can provide.

There are a few different camp grounds just outside and around the park that have tent camping too. Most of the liveries are not in the state park either so its not an all out loss there. Bring some shoes/boots for hiking too if you're into that, there are some pretty nice shorter trails throughout the park and its all within 2-3 miles of the main gate. Its a nice area with activity options and well within driving range to the point and just south west of Amish Country (Wayne and Holmes Counties). But we are about 1.5 hours south east of Sandusky, at least here in Wayne, Orrville, Wooster, Dalton, Kidron, Mt. Eaton then south into Holmes county Mt. Hope, Berlin, Millersburg, Walnut Creek clear down to Stasburg, Sugarcreek area.
The actual State Park always seems to be full when I try to get a site in the summer. The several times I have camped there I have gone to another campground. (River Run)
Here is a nice list of campgrounds in the area.
Campgrounds
Yep. If there's no "room at the Inn," just go to a local private campsite.
Great area.
Hiking, camping, fishing, whole 9 yards:
Mohican State Park
Loudonville is a nice little town; good eats, stores, even a movie theatre!
P.S.
It's a fantastic area, but word to the wise––please do the speed limit on State Route #97. Always seems to be an overly aggressive Park Ranger running radar on #97. Also, if you canoe down the rivers or horseback ride through the state park, please don't litter. There's a good chance a Park Ranger will spot you and give you a citation for tossing out a pop can, etc. I lived there on the river and this seemed to be the only gripe I ever heard with regularity.
ENJOY!
Mohican grist mill at SR #97 and SR #3––Ice cream, treats, etc.
I live in Loudonville and there are tons of places to tent camp other than the state park.
Take a look at this place.....

It is right beside the state park and you can do the canoeing from here also among a bunch of other stuff.
The guy that owns the campground also owns the canoe livery and it is within walking distance from where you would be camping.
Enjoy your visit and I'd be happy to try to answer any further questions you might have about the park or the area.
Amish country is very close by also.
Thanks for the help. I have been thru the area in the 80's and remember how pretty the area is. I plan on hitting this restaurant called "The Chalet" it was near a cheese factory and the food was great. Thanks
again.
Most campsites at Ohio state parks are reservable, but not more than 6 months out. Pure-tent campsites are often walk-in (no parking on site) and these may be non-reservable.

Just another minor point, Lon,
I lived there in Mohican on the River for about 12 years and MY WORD was the cell phone coverage spotty! It had to do with all the hills and valleys there. If you need to make calls home etc., find a "sweet spot" and remember it. I wound up using a high and clear spot in the Mohican Memorial Forest, right next to the beautiful stone chapel shrine over there on State Route #97––all my calls went thru when I phoned from there, since it's so open and on high ground:
(dedicated to Ohio's war dead: 1776-2012; all Ohio veterans who gave their life for their country have their names recorded in bound books inside)
I *think* I stayed at the "mohican reservation" a few years ago. I will not recommend it to anyone.
Not even people I don't like.
Chalet in the Valley on state route 557 in Charm, Ohio.
bring DEET and might want to put permithane on the cloths.. mid/south ohio is Tick infested... once you get north of rt250 your ok...
Rent / reserve a regular site...we do all the time and only tent camp. Mohican State Park is a nice park. Call and reserve ASAP sometimes June can get filled early.

Bingo! That is the place. Any idea if The Chalet is still a nice place to eat?
Not worried about ticks. Here in middle Tenn I donate some blood daily to those bastards.
It's still the same. There's Mrs Yoders Resturant in Mt Hope on Rt 241 is another good place to eat. They have a salad bar and buffet. The web site is mrsyoderskitchen.com for a menu and specials.
Best place to eat is the west main cafe in downtown loudonville, bar none. Int'l better restaurants are in Wooster a little ways away.
hike, canoe, mountain bike, mohican has a lot to offer. If you have the funds try out the new zip lining course (you I am afraid of heights but had fin). It was quite a thrill.
I lived not 3 miles from the park and still mountain bike there when I can
(Sorry about the grammar and spelling, its difficult yo type on my phone)
I appreciate all the info. I have already made reservations at the Mohican Adventures. Looks like I have plenty of places to hit for eats.
