Any suggestions for a hog hunt in Ohio?
Have any of you gone to any of the "ranches" in Ohio that offer hog hunts? Myself and a couple friends are considering going to one of these places. I am looking for any reccomendations on where to go or where to stay away from. Thanks fellas.
In for information

Shooting animals in a pen is hardly "hunting."
Plenty of wild hogs further south. Of course there's risk involved in wild hog hunting...

The more I research this, the more it appears as though these places are a waste of money, and hardly sporting. I have learned from guys that have been to them, that what they advertise and what you get can be two very different things. I have no interest in shooting anything that either cant get away, or doesn't want to because it is so used to humans. Oh well.
Time to start looking into heading south for some hogs........
A few guys I work with go to South Carolina every year for hog hunting.

I'd love to hunt some wild hogs. I also have no interest in walking into a pasture and gunning down an animal and calling it hunting.
I wonder how far we have to drive to get into one of the places that are ovverun with them. It seems like they are pretty big pests down south but I don't know how far south. It would be nice if we could organize something with another HTF.

The problem I've encountered with heading down south is that everyone seems to think their nuisance hogs are worth their weight in gold. For as much as everyone likes to complain about them, they want more for a chance to hunt them than for what I can buy quality livestock. I won't go somewhere to shoot a tame animal or one that can't escape it's pen.
I'd love to go on a truly wild hog hunt, but I can't see spending what they want for a nuisance animal. I imagine any decent public land in those areas is kept pretty quiet.

That doesn't surprise me at all.

I'm in for a hunt , as long as they are wild free ranging hogs. No pens for me I would enjoy the danger. .
I had a few friends that did a high wall place near Zanesville (no tigers, lions etc

) last year for hogs. I think it was 450/pig and they butchered it too. I've got to ask the name I don't know off the top of my head.
Hog Hunt Ohio public land
There are several good places to hunt hogs here in southern Ohio on public land for free.

Try GA. I have spoken with a couple of guys who have done public land hunts down there and had a great time
We had a similar thread to this a while back as far as wild hogs in Ohio. The maps are all well and good but has anyone actually seen a hog? The last thread I don't believe anyone actually had. If things have changed I'd love to know.
A friend of mine hunted hogs at Ted Nugent's ranch in Jackson MI. He enjoyed it and it didn't sound like it was shooting hogs in a pen.
Sounded like the pigs may have been captive bred at one point but they are free roaming on the ranch and at least semi-wild?
Check it our for yourself and don't take my word on the semi-wild hogs part. The only thing I know about it is the impressions that I got from my friend.

My buddy has shot 2 in the past year in the Richland Furnace apv area.He has hunted in SC on the ranches and at Ted Nugents ranch in Michigan and said that while he enjoyed it hunting here in Ohio in the wild was much more of a challenge and a much better hunt.
I have seen several while driving but have not hunted them yet myself. I live in Ross county and we are getting more and more reports of people seeing them in the eastern part of the county along Vinton and Hocking.I plan to do some hog hunting in the RF area as soon as I get another ATV as its Gods country up in there and you could walk for days before finding your way out.

This. I had a neighbor as a kid who has a lot of "African" trophies on his wall. Found out he went to these type of places to kill them.
I don't see any pride in doing that.

This topic interests me as well. Here is what I found on the ODNR website( http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/LinkClick.aspx?fileticket=MflsrmEFrLQ%3d&tabid=18847 ):

I've been invited to hit TN a few times; they're everywhere down there. I can't seem to find the time. The only preserve I know of is a place called "Tioga" in PA.
Cool it looks like they are coming to my county next

My mother in law has a couple hundred acre farm in Harrison county, she supposedly seen a pack of wild hogs last September, she called my wife ad said to get me down there and kill them all
Neighboring farmers told her the hogs would ruin her orchards and fields, I told the wife to have her get a pic or put out one of her game cameras because I dont think she knows what she is seeing
MiL said if she could she will try, I told her to jot down the sightings to see if they follow a pattern, well I never did her back from her so my "Free pork" dream has been shattered
I have access to some property in Harrison too - no one Ive talked to has seen any pigs.......

Which is probably why I never heard back from her about it

I do believe she saw something but I highly doubt it was hogs, she also said no farmers around her have any hogs so I have no idea what was in her pasture/orchard
ETA she has asked quite a few farmers around there about me coyote hunting and they all said I could hunt, there is one farmer that lets no one hunt on him but he likes my MiL so he said yes
It is too damn far for me to drive so I have never hunted down there but once and the place was littered with coyote tracks
