Help with Cali move!!
I currently reside in Maryland, not the most conducive state to my choice of hobby. I recently was offered an outstanding position at around double my income in the north Los Angeles area. I udnerstand three of my current rifles will not be welcome in CA, certainly a step in the wrong direction for enjoying my firearms. I understand there are a number of gun shops along the Nevada border that offer boarding for Cali residents in possesion of non-compliant firearms. Does anybody have experience with these type places? Any cali residents here?
Thanks,
-BunnMan
Does the increase in cost of living offset the increase in wage? It might. Just food for thought. It is expensive to live in Cali.
Personally, I wouldn't do it man. But yeah, the Cali forums will help you best with that.
I believe it should. Maryland aint cheap either, Cali definitely has a higher cost of living but it aint gonna eat up 70K a year :). Thanks for the lead on the Cali forums...I'll head there.
Go to Calguns.net and have all your questions answered!!
Are you sure your guns cannot be brought into California? with a simple bullet button od most AR type rifles are legal here.
I welcome yet another gun owner to California.
Most folks are flat out wrong about the gun laws here. When shown chapter and verse in the penal code they still don't read or understand so the ignorance is intentional.
As an example you can bring all your pistols with you as long as they meet some pretty broad requirements - no they don't have be on the approved list unless you're an FFL importing them for sales. Threaded barrels are about the biggest thing that nails the pistols but 99.75% don't have a threaded barrel. As AR-15fan said most AR's and semi-autos are allowed into the state with the additional of a button that impedes the detachment of the magazine - but doesn't stop the attachment nor the detachment of the magazine with something as simple as the tip of a bullet. The other alternative is a non-feature rifle to use magazines that you might have possessed in CA at any time prior to the year 2000 (damn it's been a long long time hasn't it?).
Life is too short to give make decisions on how you live based on firearm laws - that's not the opinion of everyone but it is mine. The extra months a year I get for my hobbies - including shooting - due to the fine weather and my added income certainty off set my hand grip on my rifle.

This. So what rifles do you think are not legal here in CA?
if the barrels are 14.5 they need to have a pinned or welded muzzle device to make it 16" or past that NO SBRs allowed. Has to be minimum 16 inches for CA legality
a bullet button takes care of anything else that isnt related to the barrel. you can have a folding stock, also buy some 10/20 round magazines when you come in..sell off your current Hi Cap magazines or leave them with family if you will ever visit your hometown again. A 10/20 round magazine is a mag that looks like it can hold 20, but can only hold 10 rounds. some people buy the 20 and just put a magpul stopper inside of the magazine.
3 things to check
- your barrel length - 16" and longer is legal 14.5 pinned
- bullet button - bought in any gun store, but look for a cheap one as turners sells them for like 27 bucks and other places sell for 20.00
- magazines - get 2 or 3 ten rounders and a couple of 10/20 round mags..
your all set!
Welcome to CALI! the home of sunshine and beautiful women! Id take these gun laws as long as it doesnt affect the half naked beach women thats down the street from my house!
Yes, my AR is a 14.5 with a welded brake. Not real crazy about the bullet button, would rather have a place to store the fun stuff along the border if thats a reality. One thing I didn't consider is how limitted my purchasing ability will be in the future. Once I'm a Cali resident will I be legally prohibitted from buying fun stuff even if I don't plan on bringing it into the state? Like, could I go 2 AZ and buy stuff if I was gonna keep it there?

Only if you had dual residency in Arizona and bought it during the portion of the year you were residing in Arizona.
Your AR will have to be longer than 30 inches with the stock fully collapsed. Otherwise it still is an AW, even with the bullet button.
One of the most important things to know is that you cannot have a magazine––pistol or rifle––that holds more than ten rounds and you can't have a threaded barrel (unless you've got the Fed permit, likewise a suppressor.).
As for accessories, on an AR15, you can have ANYTHING (again, not the threaded barrel or suppressor)––bipods, vertical grips, scopes, sights, magnifiers, lights, lasers, slings, whatever. Don't be fooled by the legalese and endlessly nested "I.2.iii.d" clauses. However, you do need either a permanently fixed magazine or use of a bullet button (it adds approximately 2 seconds to your reload time, it's not like you need a drill driver and welding torch).
Go to CalGuns.net for the laws, most up-to-date changes and information in plain English. YOU are responsible for knowing the law and cannot blame others if you run afoul of it. Knowledge is power.

Maybe I'm misreading the above but...
Threaded barrel on a pistol = bad. Generally speaking.
Threaded barrel on a long arm = okay. As long as it has a fixed mag (bullet button). Or it's registered as a CA AW, which you're too late to get.
If it has a detachable mag then a flash hider or any of the bad features = bad. See the sticky at the top of the forum. Again registered AWs are exempt.
You cannot put a high cap in a bullet button equipped rifle (well, you can but don't) as it will create an AW.
As a new resident you are inconvenienced and it will take some time to adjust. When you go to the range you will see a bunch of rifles that look and operate just like a normal rifle except for the reloads.
And don't be surprised when you see 20 and 30rd mags being used. Lots of rifles are registered AW.
