I'm a non-resident and have to fly in to LA/Anaheim for a few days on business and I'm wondering what I can bring with me.
Aside from not bringing anything in my carry-on, what can I take with me for self-defense?
What can I keep on my person, and what can I keep in the hotel?
Well, you can bring most anything you like, so long as it is a pistol that holds no more than 10 rounds in the magazine. You can bring any AR derivative that you wish, so long as it has a bullet button installed or is brought in disassembled. And, again, you no bringy the big capacity magazines. Leave 'em at home, or pin them at the 10 round mark with a rivet.
As for SKS, no collapsible stocks.

OP, please ignore most of this ^ post. It is wrong.
Per state law (municipalities may be more restrictive) you can carry just about any length auto-assist or standard folding blade upon your person. It is NOT "for protection" or it can fall under dangerous weapon law.
In your hotel, you can have almost any standard type pistol (magazine within the pistol grip), but you can't bring the magazine in if it holds over ten rounds. You may bring a shotgun or other longgun with you, but if you are looking at a detachable magazine rifle, or an AR, AK, or similar derivitive, post the make/model and we can answer more completely whether it can be brought in, or what configuration it must be in in order to be legal. Also, your pistol can not be transported loaded, but you may keep the loaded magazine inside the same locked case as the pistol.

Oh I know I don't "need" anything there, I have been in Anaheim a half-dozen times over the last few years. I asked more out of curiosity than fear for my life
I usually take a 5 shot snubbie on trips to CA. It is still registered with the DOJ in that state.
