So looking to move down to SD. What are outlying areas to look to live? Suburban is fine.
The Nevada economy is beyond shot to shit and taking people down with it, plus wife wants to be closer to family.

I would choose north of Mira Mesa Blvd. The beach areas are awesome if you're ballin'. Anywhere in the the Poway Unified School District is good. Parts of Escondido, San Marcos, Vista are okay but I would steer clear of Oceanside. Eastlake and Otay Ranch are also nice but then you are that much closer to Mexico. The city including East Village, Gaslamp, and Mission Hills have cleaned up pretty well if you're looking for city/high rise living. Ramona on east if you want to live rural.

I welcome yet another gun owner to California.

I love San Diego. The weather is the best in the nation. There's the ocean, the mountains, the desert, Los Angeles, and Mexico all within a reasonable drive of the city. Not too big, not too small, just about right for me. I love the attitude of most of the people there. Big military presence with the Naval Station. Nice night life but not a varied as Los Angeles.

I'd move there in a heartbeat if I could retain my current satisfying and well paying job.

I lived in SF for 10 years so the gun laws are no surprise. Big whoop.

Good to know it is a good town. I am looking for work now, and there seems to be lots of good opportunity.

Any other insights ae appreciated.

If you value your guns and your right to own and shoot them, then be smart and stay the hell away from Cali.

Cali is a great state for people who hate guns. Not so great for those of us who believe in and support our 2nd amendment rights.

As i just posted, i came from cali. Guns and shit is great, but if one ends up in a dying economy, what does it matter?

Nevada has a dying private sector. Vegas and Reno are not doing well at all and it is not getting any better. Getting out of a detroit situation is more important in the long run.

That and my wife wants our daughter to grow up with her cousins, and i agree with her. Besides, i lost all my guns in 1600' of lake tahoes waters.
The non cali legal things have a safe place to go.

Probably the right move for you given the circumstances you described. I moved here to Valencia from Connecticut on Tuesday, already have my CA hunting license, drivers license and will be making my first range trip tomorrow.

Adding another pro gunner to the CA ranks can only be a good thing because it adds numbers to the fight for change. I have heard good things about San Diego, what type of work are you looking in to?

OP all really depends on where you want to live. All places have run down (ghettos) and the rich kids have the better cash access to worst drugs and what not. I lived in North county (San Marcos, Vista) I lived in Mira Mesa, Otay, La Mesa, North Park and currently in Bonita. If I could I'd live in North County again in a heart beat. But I am currently looking to move back to Orange County where I raised.

Depending on where your wifes family lives. I would try to get somewhere close. Just because of the traffic. Yes at the right time of day you can drive from San Marcos to the Boarder in 45-60 mins. But on the other hand it could take you all day to do the same trip and 4pm-5pm.

Not to sound like a dick but what kind of people do you like most. lol... I hated Otay because of the TJ people and hated Mira Mesa because of the asian people.

It really all depends on you. I'd come out here one weekend and I'd drive around the areas you feel you'd like to live in. And check it out.

Welcome back to Cali, hope you and your family enjoy all the beauty that San Diego has to offer.

North County/Carlsbad is great for family. On or near the ocean and a 25 minute drive to the 15 inland. 30 minutes and you're in south OC.

When we lived in Fresno we always loved to vacation in SD. We wanted to move there but couldn't afford it. I want to live on the coast side where the weather is great. Not inland where it is hot as Hell, I've had enough of that!

OP, good luck with your move.

san diego is one of the only places i'd be in this state

i left a well paying job and great gun laws in dallas to be back here for the friends, the food and the weather

the above advice is correct. anywhere north of mira mesa blvd is great. and south of the 78. i'm actually in sorrento valley / mira mesa; i'm ok living here because i'm single wtih no family but other friends have kids going to mira mesa high and they still get mixed up in bad shit.

i'd pick one of these: poway, scripps ranch, carmel valley, westview, rancho bernardo, del mar, carmel mountain; theres tons of great safe places to be with your family

i just got back in town recently myself and am still trying to find a decent place to shoot outdoors and long range

They just finished construction on the 15 North/South expansion so that should be opening up options in North County if you need to drive down to San Diego proper. I absolutley love where I live and it is South of Mira Mesa very close to Qualcomm stadium. There are spots. If you aren't afraid of the drive maybe look at Santee/Ramona or Vista areas. Those seem to be the most reasonable right now. Of course you could join the masses making the trek from Temecula/Murrieta every day. I couldn't do it.

I assume the absolute most important aspect is your kid's school. Are you willing to put them in private school? Consider applying for a magnet school also. My youngest son attends and we are very happy with that decision.

Good luck and welcome back, we need more good people.

Sorry, we are full.

If you want to move here you have to work out a swap with a Californian willing to move to Nevada. Its the law.

Schizrade,

How is your brother (at least I think it was your brother) doing? Has he gotten squared away a bit since his drama?
Is he back to SJ or are you keeping an eye on him?

(You can PM instead )

Hey bill. He is doing really well in Reno. He has completed a 13 month program at the reno sparks gospel mission, in the process reconnecting to his religous roots.
He is working and doing well.

Thanks again to all the South Bay crew for the help.

As far as SD goes, wow. Just got back and it is an amazing area. It reminds me of Vancouver, BC.

Go ahead. Nevada awaits. Just remember that they will remind you every 15 minutes that they are native born and you are not. Also have fun in the broken economy.

Virginia and Texas have much healthier economies than CA and far better gun laws, too.

Just sayin'!

Biggest reason to move is family. I want my daughter to know her cousins.

So, don't really care. I would rather live in Cali than Tejas any day.

Don't forget about Valley Center, Fallbrook, Hidden Meadows, Ramona, and Bonsall. I lived in Escondido for 14 years, but it was getting pretty ghetto when I left. The demographic has changed in the past 5 years with the job market and real estate crash driving some of the bad element back to where they came from.

Most people I knew in Escondido were moving to Temecula and Murrietta. I ejected.

Escondido Fish and Game association has a nice range. Duncan's range in Rainbow is nice too.

i'm loving being back by the water and i try to jog the beach most days

of course i left some of my firepower in dallas and still go back to hang out with my folks often

texas in the wintertime for chicken fried steak

sd the rest of the year for fish tacoes, carne asada fries, and food from damn near any ethnicity you can imagine
