Quarry with public access? Nor-Cal Photography Shoot question.

I've been asked to photograph an album cover shot for a friend's band. He wants something that has no recognizable landmarks, and that has a moon-scape-esq look/feel to it. I suggested something like a quarry and he agreed as long as it wasn't going to have the tractors/equipment in the shot. We are all in the Sacramento/Stockton central valley area.

I'm thinking something like the quarries in Ione,

with the weird colored rocks/water, but don't know of any with sort of public access.

Any suggestions? The main objectives are:
No visible man made items
Something un-recognizable (no- "I know where that was taken" )
Easy and cheap access.
Legal access
and moon-scape esq

Bit more of a drive, but the moonrocks area north of Reno maybe?

Looks like it has potential. I'll have to check with the band's willingness to travel.

Trona pinnacles - used for the filming of Planet of the Apes.

Think you need a permit there though.

Sorry for the sidebar OP.
