Metal handguards with bipod instead of Israeli light barrel handguards
Have a set of Israeli light barrel handguards and stock on my G1 fal. Picked up a butt stock but looking for metal G1 or STG-58 handguards with bipod. Where's the best source for them? Thanks
Not knowing your experience level with the FAL, I have to ask why you would want to install metal hand guards?
The metal HGs heat up very quickly, and are one of the first things I replaced on my STGs.
Brad at
www.gunthings.com is typically a good parts source, but it looks like he only has left-side STG hand guards in stock right now...
Even though the receiver is Imbel, I thought I'd get a metal handguards and bipod to resemble the original G1 configuration. I've fire an original MARS CETME with a metal handguard and bipod quite a bit, seemed OK. Not like I'm going to do a reenactment of Hamberger Hill...

In my opinion the Izzy HGs are the best option out there for FALs. Most effective for heat, and dead-sexy!
I just picked up a STG this weekend and was thinking I wanted to swap out the HGs for Israeli ones? I did noticed they heated up some when I shot it yeaterday but not that much?
YOu can buy the cheaper heavy bbl handguards and mod them to work on the standard HG ring. Here's a pic to help you along:

Hum? So you are saying that just bending the HG rear ring in will allow HB HGs to fit? How abut with the SG short gas tube?
Folks have made slip-on tubes to cover the section the short tubes leave exposed.
But you can see the gap left after the bending mod. Try it and see what you think, several vendors have the HB HGs for $20 or so a set.

When the weather is cool metal handguards aren't so bad. Shot a mag or two in the southern summer heat and you'll be looking for a "chicken mitt" very soon!!

I might just try that. The STG HG do feel real nice in the hand and look real slim. Ill probably keepem and play with a pair of HB HGs like you suggest. Thanks
Hay is there any difference or way to tell between the STG and G1 HGs?
Oh and for the OP there is a set of STG HGs on Gunbroker for $45. Anyone know who carries the wood buttstocks?
i would highly advise you to stick with the israeli handguards, the metal ones suck and heat up too much.
As others have already stated, the metal handguards heat up FAST. My buddy bought an STG58 in normal configuration (metal handguards) and that thing gets HOT.
When I ordered my FAL, I had DSA replace the standard metal handguards with their plastic ones. No heat, good to go.
My buddy was amazed at the difference between my handguards and his.

Checked around on Falfiles and got a couple sets, very happy with both. Also did some comparing between using a Caldwell bag type rest and the bipod. At 50yds and 100yds, no change in POI even though I've read that a bipod would make it shoot higher.
Thanks guys.

I'll take those NBC handguards off your hands.

Sorry AEnemaBay, really like both. I bought the NBC handguards with butt stock, butt pad and pistol grip for $15 shipped and repainted them. He had another painted Rhodesian set without the butt pad. Send me an email, I can inquire if he still has them. wolfspotter2003@yahoo.com

What did you do with the Israeli pieces?

Sold them.
For the metal STG handguards, mine were getting uncomfortably hot so I lined the inside with about 2 or 3 layers of aluminum foil tape. I just lined it on the inside, and cut the venthole areas out with an exacto knife. The tape has its own sticky surface and bends very easily so its a simple job. This actually worked and the HG's arent so hot anymore, just a little warm but nothing uncomfortable.

I think it was home depot. It's the stuff used for sealing ventilation duct joints (I think)
Right now I have the black plastic type "B" buttstock with rubber butt pad. Just got an original wood G1 wood pistol grip and type "C" buttstock including hardware. Not sure if I'll keep the buttstock since it looks weird with the ferrule. Since my G1 is an early BGS lower, I'm pretty sure I'll have to find a type "A" buttstock with the wings that go over the lower receiver. So far no luck. Anyone know if the type "A" was made in plastic also?
AEnemaBay, set of handguards are on the way.

Wolf can I ask where you found the type "C"?
Thanks
I worked out a deal on falfiles. A member gave me the metal handguards, bipod, wood pistol grip and complete wood butt stock for my Izzy set. Might get lucky if you post a WTB. Might have some luck on here also.
