I am wanting to get back in to the fal game and I want a new one. I've owned a century built on an IMBEL receiver and a DSA 16" carbine. The century believe it or not was 100% reliable but the DSA had some feeding issues. The DSA had a standard length gas system an I'm pretty sure that combined with the 16" barrel attributed to the issues. It was an older rifle with a steyr bolt and barrel. I am looking at getting a DSA sa58 with an 18" barrel but a few months ago I read about DSA's bolts failing. Does anyone know if DSA fixed this issue? I am wanting a reliable and combat accurate battle rifle and I have always been in love with fals.
Also does anyone know what barrels DSA uses? Are their parts kit barrels that have seen alot of rds or are they new? Are the medium contour barrels worth the extra weight and are they chambered for reliable function?
Any insight would be great, I'm ready to buy one.

I hope to have some info for you soon. I shipped my unfired new DSA STG58 back to DSA to have them replace the stock barrel with a DSA medium contour 21" barrel. Strangely enough, DSA said they had to do some adjustments to make sure the chamber of the DSA (new) medium contour barrel fit the gun, even though the gun and new barrel had not seen a single round through them.
To add to my confusion, a local gunsmith (who is very highly regarded) could not get the old barrel off the rifle, which is why I sent it to DSA. He said he was afraid of damaging the receiver. I have no idea how a NIB rifle would have such a problem ... I am certain it is not the dealer (AIM Surplus) so it must be a DSA issue.
My rifle should be back in my hands in a week or two. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, as this is my first FAL.
Find a used DSA that has the original parts kit, that way you know it will have the good bolt. Another option is the DSA Imbel rifles that Aim has in stock.
Thanks for the info guys. I guess the days of good Austrian parts DSAs are over

I will get an LMT MWS instead and pickup used quality FAL later on. Thanks again.
The FAL receiver wrench is especially made to fit around the portion of the receiver
where the barrel attaches so that you don't twist the receiver out of alignment.
16" barrel shouldn't have any probs running correctly if the gun was built correctly.
The gas port on the barrel may have to be opened up to the CORRECT size.
DSA has had a few probs with bolts and ejector blocks since they started making their own parts.
I believe you want the original 2 piece extractor block.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I thought it rather amusing that DSA pulled my 1-piece extractor block and replaced it with a 2-piece extractor block on a NIB DSA STG58 that was in the shop merely for a barrel change. I did not request them to swap out the existing block. Of course they didn't hesitate to charge me $190 for the entire procedure either.

I am really having my doubts on DSA "quality".
