Availability of FAL parts kits in the past?
Were they as common and cheap as AK kits once were? How cheap were they?
I've heard as low as $90 for some of the Rhodesian kits that looked rather worn. I paid $220 shipped for mine about a year ago but I caught the absolute tail end of lower kit prices, it seems. It was rare to find one that low a year ago. I rarely see one for less than $400 today.
I bought three G1 kits (which included good barrels) from Tapco in 2000 for around $90 a pop. These were the standard Turkish imports and kind of beat up. Wish I had more $$ at the time. But I can't complain.
I remember the ads for Israeli heavy barrel kits in shotgun news that ran forever- $129. Most kits were under $200.
I remember getting some Tapco kits for about 90 bucks, DSA refinished matching G1 kit for about 175, the SA kits were worn mostly so I stayed away, Austrian STG58 kit for 175. Those were the days/
They were almost as cheapest ak kits Tapco ran a sale on AMD'-65s for $65 which was the cheapest ak kit I ever bought and I also snagged several g1's from them for around $100 and several Imbels for around the same price.
I got my G1 kit from DSA, cleaned and reparked, for around $180. Put it on an Imbel Type 3 with the help of a friend. With compliance parts and receiver the total was well below $500. Ammo cost around $0.10 per round for quality FN, Aussie, Hirt or SA surplus, too.
The primo kits were a bit more expensive. As new matched StG kits were $329 and as new Dan's grade 1 Imbel kits were $250.
Got my Imbel kit for 150 and receiver for 250 in 2004. Completed the rifle after fees and the what not at around 650 ish.... wish i built another but was living at home and had a crap job.
I got one of Dan's $120 Imbel kits more than few years ago. I recall them going for $90-100 in the past, but no lower.
The FAL Files had a huge group buy back around '98 or so I think it was. $99 each for a Chilean Imbel kit with chrome lined barrel. I bought 5. Built 3. Sold 2 of them a few years a go for a decent amount of cash each.
Most of the kits were unfired. 4 of my 5 were. Next to no handling marks at all.
I bought and built up an inch kit from GunPartsGuy in the early '90s. The kit set me back about $140 I believe. A new Ironwood walnut stock set including the pg was $100, finished. The completed rifle was a beauty. one of those after you sell it you kick yourself about a week later.
got 2 primo STG58 kits for $175 ea from AD Global? I think thats who it was, damn nice kits glad I kept them

Tapco used to sell Imbel kits for $99.
Used to be able to get absolutely brand new G1 kits from DSA at the Lake County gunshow early-mid 90's for less than $200. IIRC DSA used to sell actual Rosario receivers as well in those days.
I picked up Imbel kits from Dan's Sporting Goods for $125. I built one and sold the rest of the kits.
Here's what the one I built looks like.

Recently came across a DSA pamphlet from 2001 I believe:
NOS Belgian Para barrels $160.
Complete StG-58 front ends $99.
NOS Argentine barrels $79.
Just remembered this one:
DSA December 2005
New L1A1 bolt carrier $20
New L1A1 bolt $20
Classic Arms- several sub $200.00 primo StG58 kits from them....I miss the days of cheap .308....
I'm FALaholic #113 a the FALFiles, and was there during the blue board days, so it's been a while...

THAT WAS THE DELIVERED PRICE!!!!!
The first FAL I had built was on an excellent StG kit from Federal Arms Corp for $165 IIRC. I still have it.
I remeber ordering kits from TAPCO while I was at PSAB and having them sent to my moms house! Wish I still had those kits

the first L1A1 kits i bought were british kits, they were like new cut up rifles and and if you bought 5 they were $500 and free shipping.
the first 15 or 20 fal kit i got were imbel and they were very nice from $75 to $100 each kit. when they got to $150 i quit buying them. i don't know how many i bought total of them.
i bought a lot of the SA kits for $90 to $125, i don't remember how many.
yep! those were the good old days.
ron
Early 90s... I got a Ishapore L1A1 brit kit for $179 and a Argiy type ll reciever for $200.
I picked up my Imbel kits for around $145 each. Picked up the Imbel receivers for about the same price.
Had three FAL's built....2 Para's and a 50.00. Beautiful guns. Still have all three.
Have a G1 waiting to be built...DSA G1 marked receiver with a pristine G1 kit...paid $250 for the kit, and $325 for the receiver. Will turn into a very sweet rifle.
Wish I bought about ten more FAL kits and receivers
Sharp looking rifle there!
I bought 10 of the "grade 3" IMBEL kits from Dan's Ammo for $129 each plus shipping. I bought a couple of battle packs of South African M1A2 ammo every pay day for several months from Dan back then too. Man, those were good days to be a fan of the FN rifle.
The grade 3's were essentially new rifles that had been carried a lot but fired very little. They had cosmetic wear, but almost no wear from actual use.
bought my first kits from Tapco back when they were 99.00 each or 2 for 89.00
wife surprised me with a G1 and an Imbel kit.
then I was like...........now what in the fuck do I do??
have built many since. I currently have an bag 'o parts rifle with everything from an Israeli charging handle on it to a T48 reproduction trigger guard. 21" new Paratrooper (insert South american Country here) barrel.
It is my favorite rifle I have ever owned(and there have been MANY). Eats everything I feed it and is more accurate than anything I have owned.

Every week on my day off at PSAB I used to sit up in the computer room for hours ordering crap from tapco, cheaper than dirt, and other suprlus sites I forget. All my haz duty pay and tax free went straight to gun toys. When I got home 3 months later I had piles of boxes, it was like super christmas

Man, you ain't kiddin'. Getting boxes from gun parts vendors back then had a special giddiness to it that other stuff just doesn't have.
Bought 10 G-1 kits and 10 Imbel kits from Tapco for 89.99 each. Bought 5 "mixed" kits for 79.99 each, they were all SA lowers with G-1 uppers. One of them had a Metric Sand Cut bolt group!
Early/mid 90's there was an ad in Shotgun News: Burns Brothers Israeli Heavy -barrel parts kits $99.00. Glad I grabbed one. I also got STG58 pristine kits for around $250 about 2001 or so. I also remember Sarco had NEW Israeli HB complete front-ends (Barrel, Handguards, bipod) for about $139. Starting around 1992 I saved a Shotgun news about every 2 years and need to get them out...
