gas lug(?) loosening on my M1A

Hey all,

I tried to search for any information on the gas lug that keeps on coming loose during fire. I don't know if that's even what it's called but it's the little lug/screw at the end of the gas/piston assembly.

I have seen vids of Hickok45 that kept fiddling with it after shooting it and hand tightening it. Is there a reason why this thing keeps on coming loose? Is there a point where it can be over torqued?

The proper terminology is "gas plug".

I had this problem on my first M1A. Once I shimmed the gas cylinder it stopped. As with any threaded object, there is an overtorque possibility, so don't over do it.

Tighten to 15 foot pounds then mark it so you can see if its loosening.

cool thanks for the input guys. I will see if I can tighten it down again and see if it comes loose.

What are you using to tighten it? Clean ALL the oil off the threads of both the plug and assy, hand tighten then snug down with the proper tool.

It also might be to loose on the thread fit.
Changing it out for a USGI unit might solve the problem.
SA Inc. gas plugs are NOT stainless like the USGI part.
And don't use anti seize crap on it either.

Was just using a standard wrench. I will try cleaning it out. Thanks!
