M1 Carbine ammo question.
I've been having 20% failure to fire with Aguila carbine ammo purchased from
CMP in my rack grade Inland. Has anyone had problems with this ammo or is it my firing pin?
Any suggestions?
Probably the gun, I have the same ammo and it's worked flawlessly.
Tag for interest. I've stockpiled a few hundred rounds of this in anticipation of buying a carbine this year.
A certain site sponsor has it for as low as $13.95 a box.
Aguila is a little on the weak side, but my Dad and I have run it in five different carbines (2 Inlands, 1 NPM, 1 Rock-Ola, and 1 IBM) and it's worked fine in all of them.
Check firing pin protrusion, if it's OK then a new firing pin spring.
Check the hammer spring. IIRC, the hammer spring length is supposed to be about 2 1/2". I got a rack from the CMP that someone had cut the hammer spring back to 1 1/2". Don't put in a Wolf extra power spring. Theo ne I got was about 2 5/8" long, and would not allow the gun to cycle.

Thanks for the suggestions; keep them coming.
I will check the firing pin and compare it to one in my other carbine and spares kit.
Also, not to sound ignorant; but I've checked the schematics and can't find the firing pin spring you are refering to.
Hammer spring, not firing pin spring.
Change the hammer spring. I end up buying lots of boxes of PRVI instead - works fine, never had a problem.
Did you dissasemble the bolt and clean it when you got the carbine?
It could be sticky slowing down the pin when hit causing light strokes

do this first,
I only cleaned the outside of the bolt, but I will disassemble it and
clean the internal parts. Also, I did not change any of the springs after
I received the rifle from CMP. Should I also change the other springs just
for good measure?
The only two springs I would worry about would be the hammerspringand the slide spring.
I've also had problems with Aguila. I stopped using it since all the others worked fine. Also, unburnt powder on my hands got annoying.
Finally got time to work with my M1 Carbine and changed out the
hammer spring. It took a lot more force to compress the new spring
when I installed it. The FTF rate went down from 20% to 6% so I looked at
the primers and definite light strikes on the primers.
The two on the left fired and the two on right were FTF; so I changed out the firing pin
and that seemed to solve the problem. Old firing pin didn't look worn out when compared
to the new one but changing it out helped.
6% failure with Aguila is still very high. I've shot hundreds of rounds through my Inland service grande and never had a failure.
After changing out both the hammer spring and firing pin,
I did not have any further FTF. I'll shoot her again this
weekend when I go to my compound; I mean farm.
