New NM M1A, came with SA Generation 4 mount, advice?
Bought my second M1A Friday, a National Match with SS barrel and synthetic stock. Came with a 3-9 power Nikon Buckmaster and a new SA Gen 4 mount, rifle never fired, all new. Does anyone have any thoughts on this new mount? I currently have the Gen 3 mount on my standard that works well, this one seems to hold tight so far and is open on the top above the chamber(makes cleaning way easier). Im thinking about keeping it on and mounting my Kahles ZF95 to it so the standard can go back to irons.
Anyone have any prior experience with this 4th gen mount?
I have the Gen 3 on my Super Match. Never has loosened or lost Zero. I put a Sadlak Airborne on it and really liked the fit and the way it looks. Trouble is out of 40 rounds it stove piped on two and put some brass marks on the OP rod as well as dented the stock in a couple of spots. Never had any ejection issues with the taller SA mount so it is back on it.. People curse the SA mounts but mine has really worked well for me so far..

You could become the official SA gen 4 scope mount tester for us.

I might just have to take you up on that, id be proud to haha. Today I have to Unitize the gas cylinder and then put in a NM spring guide in, add the MK 4 rings and ZF95. If we dont get the predicted 28 inches of snow maybe I will get out to test it.
As of yesterday though, I shot the NM with the gen. 4 scope mount, unknown rings(look heavy duty but not mk 4's), and 3-9 Nikon. I was shooting 1.5 inch groups with German DAG ammo and MOA size groups with the Federal Gold Medal Match 168 gr BTHP's. I only fired 15 rounds because of a driving rain and 40 mph gusts, but I believe that if the conditions were different, I might be able to make those numbers better.
Well you sound like your going to be one hell of a good tester . Let's see how well the mount holds zero. That has been the main concern with mounts since day 1
It depends, there is two versions of it. One is steel and the other is aluminum. The aluminum is more of the same. The steel one is well steel which should prove to be better. I guess if it actually fits the receiver well and tightens down nice and snug you should at least try it. If it doesn't work, then pawn it, and get something better.
Mine is the Aluminum mount.
The problem with the SA 4th Gen mount is ( IMHO ).... that it has no "ridges/bars/key" that fit into the reciever scope keyways...arrrgh ! I liked the design of this scope mount, and bought one when it was first released. Imagine my surprise when I got it and saw that it had NO such ridges... for that matter it looked like they had been milled off. While SA customer service said that they were not needed, I didn't like idea of all sorts of "holding pressure" being focused on the "stripper clip" slot. I did not mount it and returned it to SA.
BTW... the rest of the design was GTG.
