I have questions on some 1907 slings I have I'm hoping someone can help me with:
The first pic is of two slings I have with brass hooks. I'm guessing by the construction these are not GI sliings? No markings on them that I can find, and the hooks are made of .070" thick material.
The remaining pics are from a sling that came with a rifle I bought. Would this be an original military sling? Are there reproductions like this out there, and if so how would you tell if it is an original or a repro? The hooks on this one are made of .090" thick material. I can't seem to find much information on Milsco slings.
Thanks in advance.
Top sling is of the Hunters and/or Uncle Mike's style - also quite commonly seen in the non-issue 1" width
Your MILSO sling is
possibly issue - though the frogs look painted - which is not correct for mil-spec: WW1 and up to early WW2 the frogs were blackened brass; from about '42 onwards they were park'd steel
Good website out there on
military rifle slings
Hope this helps

I checked the slings in the top photo and the "brass" hooks and rivets attract a magnet, so plated if anything to look like brass

.
The Milsco sling hooks are steel and definitely painted, but the rivets do not attract a magnet.

Yes - should have said: the top cheaper sling has brass plated steel frogs
The sewing on the MILSCO is not quite to spec. either - on the area where the "D-ring" is fitted to the shorter section (actual shape is rounded loop)
The thread should have a couple more stitches on the inner section running parallel to the outer edge thread - this is known as "castle" sewing among sling makers
The MILSCO rivets look like the correct metal - normally brass or copper
Get some Fiebings Mink Oil Paste on the Milsco & get it used
The other sling, not for me to tell you what to do with it - but the ones I don't throw in the bin sometimes get used as emergency dog collars or whatever I need a length of spare leather for & haven't got time to cut a new strip off a hide
I saw repro Milsco 1944 slings exactly like the one you have pictured for sale at Sarco a few years back for $20 a pop.
Definitely a repro.
