Have a chance to pick up a M77 30-06 (my guess is a standard, havnt looked at it yet), blued barrel, wood stocks, plus 200rounds of ammo and a hard case for $400. Buddy at work is looking to sell it and I am been looking for a 30-06 so the timing may be right,

I know that there are many factors that go into pricing a gun but assuming that everything is "middle of the road" (minor scratches, no major rust etc) qualitiy wise on he gun is $400 a decent price? I have seen them online NIB for high 600 to mid 800.

Are these decent guns? would be used to hunting in Michigan. How are the stock triggers (adjustable?) how are the barrels etc.

Wat kind of MOA are you geting at say 100 meters?

Thanks in advance,

Sounds like a good deal to me. I have a M77 in .30-06. If I do my part I can get an inch a 100 yards with it using 150 CoreLokts. There may be ammo out there that it likes better but this is all I've run through it. That was enough for white tail hunting up in KY where I used to live. I like the factory trigger just fine, but I'm not a trigger snob, and most of my trigger time is on a Glock trigger, so everything else feels light and crisp to me!

I have an M77 MKII in 30-06. I paid $475 for it new in 2003, back when you could get a deal at Gander Mountain. It will shoot 1.25-1.5 MOA with about any cheap factory load I put in it. Keep in mind, it isn't a bench rest rifle that many people think they need. It will serve you well as a hunting rifle. The price seems good.

Oringinal M77, a MkII, or the MkII Hawkeye?

The M77's had indifferent barrel QC. Since the later MkII's and all of the Hawkeye's have hammer forged barrels made in house by Ruger.

Gun is a MkII. less than 50 rounds through it (no reason not to belive my buddy), stock have very minor blemishes and barrel has one scratch that I should have no problem fixing with a Bluing tough up pen.

Offered $350 for the gun (based on the scratch), plano hard case and 200 rounds and he accepted. Think this will be a decent addition to my armory (had been looking for a decent 30-06 for a while).

Thanks

Yep, sounds like you got a good deal. I have one in 7mm Magnum that I bought 13 years ago, and it has been a great rifle. My son and I have killed quite a few deer with it.

I had one years ago that shot ok after I fixed heavy trigger. These aren't benchrest guns. The medium weight barrels will heat up and start stringing if you rush your shots.

Look here at midway for a complete replacement trigger for $108,also various trigger springs and such.

My original trigger was honestly nearly 10lbs and next to impossible to hit anything with. the Timey dropped right in with a couple of screws and was just wonderfull

cool thanks for the info on the trigger.

I need to look and see if the action needs to be/should be bedded too.

The original triggers blew.

The MKII's are not adjustable, but any gunsmith can make it a 3.5lb trigger, no problem.

If you want, give Spec-Tech Inc. Triggers a look for the MKII. They are quite good.

I would say you got a good deal especially considering the ammo you recieved with it. I know a guy who shot one for years and never had a issue. The triggers were always OK to me as I never really expected them to break at 2lbs or so. Accuracy has always been a topic of debate with some guys. I have a 77R in 250-3000 that is as accurate as my varminters, I also have a 77R in 257Robts that holds around a inch and maybe a hair less, now some guys were telling me that that just wouldnt do and I should expect more from it. I myself was OK with it and there wasnt a groundhog that got within 250yds of me that was safe, So I would expect it would make short work of a deer as well. In the end they are factory stock guns with sporter weight barrels.

I have a Ruger M77 Mark II stainless/synthetic in 30/06 that I purchased 10 years ago for $363.00. It is, as others have said, a 1 1/4" to 1 1/2" gun at 100 yards. Good enough for hunting.

The trigger is a bit heavy but not intolerable.

It sounds like you did ok on the price. Good hunting!
