Has anybody shot their Gunsite Scout at 300+ yards?

I am really considering buying this rifle to use as a hunting rifle. If I were to buy the rifle I would mount a traditional 3-9x scope, which I think is prefect for deer hunting. I would like to use this rifle out to at least 300yards. I dont plan on using match ammo as this rifle would be used for hunting. Has anyone shot their Scout this far? What were the results?

I have shot it at 200 yards with a 4x scope, FGMM 168 at a 12" plate and could easily hit it.

Read some of the gun writer reviews from the Gunsite demo. They were shooting it at 300+..

It will do what you want...

100 yard group 4X scope, FGGM 168.. I think I can do better and get it half that size.

I'd be happy with groups that size. I would really like to be able to shoot at least 3moa groups at 300.

If you are using a scout scope setup, it will probably be your limiting factor. The cross-hairs on the scout scope (both Leupold and Burris) are a little over-sized as compared with traditional style scopes. They will cover a larger area at 300 yards, than the group they can shoot. You might want to consider a traditional scope mounting style, which will probably require the removal of the rear sight. No biggy, it is designed to be easily removed for this purpose using normal tools. If you purchased your rifle new, it may have come with rings, specifically for this purpose. Mine did not come with the rings, but a friend of mine did receive them in his box.

I have shot steel targets at 500, and experienced no problems after I adjusted for elevation. A Ruger test marksman shot gongs out to 1000 yards with the rifle, reportedly, but no mention as to the size of the gongs was given. With match loads, mine shoots just under MOA very consistently. My go to rifle in my car is a Steyr .376 Scout, but if I were to carry only one rifle, to cover all tasks that might present themselves, I would pick the Ruger, and not look back.

Good Luck OP!

I know of two guys shooting their GSR's in Silhouette matches, the rams are at 500 yards. One of them is competitive, usually within 2 or 3 of the winner who's rifle is set up for the silhouette game. I believe he said that his handloads improved the accuracy by a few targets per match but even with the inexpensive Federal ammo he was still in the top half of the competitors. Not bad for a general purpose rifle.

I'm not very familiar with these type of matches, is that with irons only?

There are a lot of varieties of silhouette, the matches the GSR's are competing in allow glass but must be shot offhand. The Rams are set at 500 yards and the chickens are at 200. It's a fun game. I haven't competed with my GSR yet as I usually do Levergun and handgun silhouette (iron sights). Its more of a competition with yourself. My goal is always to knock one more over than my last time out. Sometimes you're on and it seems easy. Earlier this year I had my best match ever and the very next month I had my worst... The toughest distance to overcome is the 5" between your ears.

Once or twice a year I shoot the Highpower Garand style matches - iron sights out to 600 yards in prone, sitting and standing (offhand). I use a 1903 A3 but I would love to do a match with my GSR - which is a more accurate rifle. My scores in those matches are typically 410-430 (out of 500) I bet with the GSR I could probably push that score up another 20 or 30.
