A Friends son bought one for hunting. Just use a wrench of the proper size, I cannot remember the size, it is 5/8 -24 right hand thread, with a crush washer.

I used a large screw driver and jammed it in between the tines.
It bent the tines but I didn't need to save it for anything......

The A2 I installed had flat sides for a wrench..

Early GSR didn't have flat areas for a wrench. I got mine off like CoyoteGray but I used 2 screwdrivers opposite of each other on the FS. Some owners used #60 torx head bit stuck in the FS opening.

Mine has no flats either and I used a piece of flat steel that fit between the tines. They are very tight and using a screw driver will dick it up. The steel flat will disperse the pressure more evenly.

#60 torx is the best option if your FH dose not have flats. Secure it in a good gun vise or shop wood vise. It's on tight so flat steel or screw drivers will risk damaging the FH.

As others have stated, and according to the scout rifle forum (another website)...the official tool is indeed a Torx #60.....bearing in mind that elbow grease is also needed as they are usually on very tightly. ........Hope you enjoy your GSR.

Couldn't get mine off without a vice, brought it to a reputable gunsmith.

He took off the stock, put the action/barrel in a vice and just used a standard non-adjustable wrench to get it off. Actually, it came off with relative ease.

Then he installed the Armalite A2 FH, the washer it came with though had to be filed a bit as the ports were off 90 degrees.

Worth the $20.

Hat is my plan too. It is no wonder that Armelite has sold out of flash hiders. I had to buy a DPMS one from Brownells.

If any of youse that replaced the factory hider with another want to recoup your loss, let me know, as I want an extra Ruger hider to put on my RFB when I get my Sandstorm.

I did hit mine with a blow torch (still looks ok for the most part), so wouldn't charge you. If you want I'll send it to you for nothing, if you use it great....if not no big deal.

Just send a pm if interested.

+1, my 10/22 has the same flash hider w/ no flats.

I put it in a vice and used a screwdriver to twist it off, I got lucky and didn't bend/scratch it at all.
