For $399. Should I bite? This is one of the very early ones without the left side cover. Never seen one of these before with a wooden handguard. I know nothing about the early ones.

Ruger no longer provides support for the 180 series and parts are not interchangeable with the later series; so if something breaks, you are out of luck. Additionally, there are few if any aftermarket parts available for the 180 series. Some people want nothing to do with them for these reasons; however, others say if it is in good condition & you can get it cheap enough, go for it.

At $399 I laid it away. My kid loves Garands, but isn't old enough to heft it for more than two or three shots. He wants to help pay it down to with his allowance so that it can be his when he's old enough. I think it will be fun for both of us. I don't plan to burn thousands of rounds through it, just take it to the range and maybe smoke a coyote or two. I think I'll get a couple 20 rounders for it and call it good.

nice, for $399 I'd have jumped on it too. The 180 and the GB are the only Mini's I'm really interested in

I got a 187 series from my uncle in July for $500, of course he also threw in a crate of ammo with it, so I won't complain about the price.

This one has the wood handguard too. I am pretty excited about it. There's just something about early minis

A 180-series Mini-14 was my first "real" centerfire rifle, back around 1986. I picked it up, lightly used from a local gun show for the princely sum of $250. I loved that rifle, and it shot well enough for me at the time; lots of fun and good memories! Mine had the wood handguard too, and the bolts on the 180-series have a roller on them, just like the USGI M14 rifles. The bolt roller was dropped from all later production Mini's.

I think you & your son are gonna love your new/old Mini.
