Picked up a lightly used 581 Tactical a few days ago in a pawnshop for $425 + tax. Came with the lame Ramline folding stock and a factory 20. Pretty good deal I couldn't pass up when you look at how much they cost new.

that's a steal compared to what I paid for mine. ( bought during the Obumer rush )

tell us how it shoots when you get a chance.

The RamLine Mini-type folder is alarmingly flimsy. I had one, and I got rid of it quickly, then bought a Butler Creek folder with which I am entirely satisfied. I understand that the similar Choate folder is of high quality also, though I've never handled one.

RamLine makes some good products––their M1 Garand stock, for one–– but their folder isn't one of them.

Sell it off and replace with something better. YMMV.

ETA: Good Buy!

A factory wood stock on a tactical would look superb. They go on ebay all the time for under $25.

Probably going to get a Factory walnut stock for it. I have a late LE GB with the synthetic stock, don't care for the Ruger factory mini synthetic stock.

Usually there are tons of factory take-off stocks at the G-Show but for some reason the only Mini stocks at this weekends show were used Bu-Creek folders for more than what a new one costs .

Most of the factory stocks are, I believe, birch. They refinish real nice, though.

The only walnut stocks I know of are the factory circassians for that run of special edition tacticals for Davidson's.

581 Tactical is high on my want list. I'd really would like one in stainless though. In my area they're all higher than a cat's back as far as pricing goes:( Just have to be patient. Eventually I'd like to have one installed in an original folder:)

i agree with the other folks here...
pick up a factory wooden stock

if you want to go cheap....
GunDoc @ Great West Gunsmithing used to have a surplus of them that he would sell for cheap (they were the old style regular wood stocks and not the nicer newer ones with the buttpad, the older stocks had that curvature and metal plate on them... kind of like a levergun)
i dont know if he has them anymore, they are not listed on his site but you cold give him a call or e-mail and find out...
GunDoc's contact info

either a factory wood (like i said, i think the newer ones are leaps and bounds better than the stocks they had out a few years ago) or a Hogue would be a nice replacement for that flimsy one that came on it.
if you want a more "tactical" approach, there are other stocks out there such as the SCAR over at "Clyde's Armory" that you can now get with a folder adapter that accepts AR collapsible stocks and then the TROY for which i think ACE makes a folding adapter for all AR stocks that wold work on that as well....

by the way, Wetidlerjr, that is a nice looking setup you got there, i particularly like that you went with a traditional stock over a collapsible one, looks neat

i have held those ramlines, and you are not kidding, those things are twisty/flimsy and not an suitable shooting platform at all

Going to keep an eye out for a newer style 581 woodstock with the buttpad and not an older stock with the cheesy plastic buttplate. Seems most of the places selling factory wood stocks only have the older plastic buttplate stocks...

if push comes to shove and you really need to get your hands on one... and you absolutely cannot find one anywhere else...
....then you can always buy one right from Ruger by calling up customer service. the downside of this is that you wont get a deal on the part.
heck, you could even put one of those big ass Target Mini stocks on it then (but i dont recommend it as you wont be able to use irons with the comb on that thing)
just saying that you can get any factory stock from them.....( except the discontinued ones like the factory folder )

Now this is a perfect example of why I hate ARFCOMM. You guys post pics of really cool shit and I begin to think I must have it and add it to the growing list. Thanks a million pal!

You may want to double check your stock as it does not appear that the stock liner is installed. It looks like there are holes for the factory screws on each side below the receiver but they are not there. I'm not familiar with the Ram Line folder but if you decide to keep it, you should see if it requires that part installed in the stock to obtain good accuracy. If it does need it and it is not installed, I'm sure you will have some problems with either accuracy or reliability. You should check if the forearm liner is necessary as well.

I noticed it was missing the liner when I bought it but I was planning on ditching the RL stock anyway.

I've had great luck with the SCAR-CQB stock for the Mini-14/AC-556.

But cheap it ain't.

Choate makes an inexpensive adjustable stock.. here's one the previous owner installed on a 581-series that I recently picked up.

Its 5-position glass filled fiberglass stock is a decent alternative to the unpopular ATI & Ramline models.

Don't overlook Butler Creek folding stocks, although not "tacticool", they're well built and their (folding) stocks lock up fairly tight.
