Short Barrel Rifle (I want to change mine up)

Currently I have a 11.5" upper with a Larue 7.0 rail on my SBR. I want to change it up to a shorter barrel length (7" I'm thinking). Anyone have any pictures of their gun with a 7" barrel under a 7" rail? Thoughts on the matter? I know ballistics won't be the best.

Just curious for opinions. I'm looking to make the gun a little more compact than it currently is.

Thanks. Anyone have any comments on theirs? Reliability? Problems running, etc etc.

7" bbl under 7" rail will put part of the flash suppressor under the rail. Not sure if that's what you want unless you're planning on a kx3 or sound suppressor.

7" rail with 8" bbl.

Wasn't sure if I'd want the KX3 or not.

No monies for a suppressor yet....

Just trying to get an idea of what set up works well.

I'm guessing I'd need a low profile gas block?

It is a thoroughbred frankengun.
RRA quad rail.
Unknown 7.5" barrel.
Foregrip that was laying in the closet.
Laser that was laying in the closet.
MBUS sights.
Four postition stock I had taken off another AR.
Stark grip.
Cerro Forge upper and lower.
Troy ambi bolt release.
Unknown knockoff of the KX3 Flash Suppressor that I got at a gunshow.
Even though she is ugly she is mine and I love her.

Fair enough. Thanks for the reply!

At this point I'm debating about getting a 7.5 inch barrel and a used upper and used rail over the next few months and just assembling a new smaller upper. I don't particularly want to trade my current set up. Plus that would give me an excuse to get another lower and SBR that one too...

I have a 7.5" SBR-

No issues, 100% reliable with brass and steel case.

Spikes upper and lower, Spikes Chrome BCG, SS 7.5" 1/9 twist barrel. Troy TRX rail, Magpul MOE Stock and grip. HK style 416 sights.

Light weight, easy to handle and fun to shoot.

Who makes your barrel? That's a nice looking gun.

Thanks, it's the 7.5 ich barrel from here-http://www.sherluk.com/m16a.php top barrel on the list.

When I go to rebarrel it, will use the 7.5 inch barrel from Rainer Arms. It's a 1/8 twist with the Wylde Chamber.

Nothing wrong with the barrel I have now, I just want a twist that can better utilize the stock pile of 62gr and heavier stuff I have.

Any recommendations for what barrel I should look for? I don't really have a stock pile of ammo. One of the constables who works for my dad gave me 1000 rounds of some Malaysian stuff. I don't know what grain that is though.

Just looking for thoughts an ideas.

The Malya I had was 55gr.

I would go with this barrel- http://www.rainierarms.com/?page=shop/detail&product_id=1026

When I rebarrel mine, I will go with that one.

The Wylde Chamber is a mix between a 5.56 and a .223 chamber, that allows you to safely shoot both in the same barrel. My 12.5 has a White Oak Armory barrel with a 1/7 twist, with a Wylde Chamber.

That 1/8 twist is a good twist for a 7.5 inch barrel.

Can you explain the Wylde Chamber to me? Is that the chamber that comes standard on say my Colt upper which the barrel is marked 5.56 on? Is any barrel that is marked Wylde .223 safe to shoot 5.56 out of?

Just trying to educate myself a bit more.

What else would I need in addition to the barrel? A low profile gas block? What size opening? Gas tube? etc?

Your Colt will not have it.

The Wylde Chamber was esigned by and named after Bill Wylde, this chambering was designed to accurately shoot the military ball ammo of the day while still feeding reliably. It shoots the longer 80 gr bullets commonly used in the sport of Highpower Rifle Competition very well and is one of the preferred chambers for that use. While the Wylde chamber allows for optimal seating depth of 80 grain bullets over .223 Remington and 5.56 NATO, it is capable of accepting both ammunition types.

If you buy a barrel quailty barrel, the port size [i]should[/b] be just fine.

If you are going with a rail, you will need a lo-pro gas block and what ever length tube you need.

The 12.5 barrel has a carbine length tube, like the pistol.

Buy the barrel from Rainer, pick a gas block from them and have them dimple the barrel for the GB's set screws.
