 Savage .308 barrel life?

I have a Savage 10PC and I'm just wondering how many rounds you guys are getting out your rifles before you see accuracy suffer. Right now I only have 294 rounds through it but I'm wondering what to expect. Thanks.

I've got a 10FP LE2b and have about 3,000 rounds through it and it's shooting the best it's ever shot, but I do have about ~.030" of throat errosion, so that's an issue.

I reload and can seat the bullets a bit longer, still being within the mag box length, but I figure I still have a couple of thousand more rounds to go.

Hard to say.

Some guys shoot one, then drink some coffee, clean, walk around and BS, then eventually get around to shooting another round.

Some guys crank rounds downrange until mirage off the barrel forces them to stop.

I veer closer to the latter.

.308's shooting factory loads can go 8-10K.......or less. It all depends.

However keep in mind that by the time you have "worn out" the barrel on that rifle you will have put several times it's value through the barrel in the form of ammo.

Drive it like you need to drive it. Worry about replacing the tires when the time comes.

Thanks for the replys. I guess I'm just curious so I know what to expect. As for shooting habits I'm not drinking coffee between shots nor frying bacon on the barrel...I'm somewhere in between. I do hope I can expect at least 5000 rounds downrange before I have to replace it though.

The good thing about the Savage is that even if you do have to replace the barrel, it can be done at home

If you aren't smoking the barrel there is no reason you won't be able to get 5K from the barrel. I have over 3K on my Remington at a pretty heavy pace and it's still well within acceptable.

I had well over 8,000 rounds through a douglas barreled M14 that I shot in highpower and ITT matches and it was still quite accurate when it was finally rebarreled.

You should be able to get well over 5000 rounds out of a savage factory barrel.

Before I say a word, first I gotta say that I like what you have put together there. What kind of accuracy are getting now with your present round count?

I know a guy at the range has a 10FP 24" 308 and he has over 6,000 rounds through his rifle. He's starting to think about getting a new barrel, but I bet it's still going to be a while since even though it's not at it's prime, it's still an outstanding shooter.

Factory ammo 5 shot groups I'm getting 1/2 MOA. Handloads are a little better. I have gotten some groups just over 1/4" with handloads but I'm not the most consistant shooter from the bench so its only been a few.

I ran over 1,000 rounds through my 10FP this year and it still shoots lights out. You should be good to go for a while I'd bet.
