Howa 1500 223 Varminter heavy barrel

I have a Remington 700 SPS tactical with bushnell 3200 10x which is working great in .308

Now I'd like to start pushing .223 down a tube. What do you think of the Howa Varminter for $75 less?

Pros/cons vs Remington Tactical? Should I be looking at 20" or 26"?

For only $75 less I would stick with the Remington.

Nothing wrong with the Howa, but the Remington will hold it's value better and will have more available for it.

Not concerned with resale. Concerned with accuracy.

I believe the howa takes remington bases. Can I put the EGW 20moa rem base on it?

I dunno.

Regardless of resale, if $75 is the difference between a US made rifle and an import that will accomplish the same task, then the decision is easy.

I believe you will find that accuracy is comparable. They are both production rifles so accuracy will depend on what day they were made.

I've never shot the Howa in .223 but I have shot it in 22-250. A friend of mine bought one at my suggestion (price was very good). Shooting my handloads from it and my 700 I couldn't really tell a difference. Triggers are very similar in adjustment. My friend made an oops and actually adjusted his to the point where if he dropped the rifle 6 inches it would go off. Got that fixed in short order.

Personally I think it should be a little cheaper yet to make me choose it over the 700 but I doubt you'd be disappointed with it.

yup. use a LA rem base to fit the SA howa 1500. not being concerned with resale? buy the howa... better for about ten genuine reasons when compared to the 700. all the things you can buy to add on or change a 700 can be had for the howa too...

The only problem with a howa is the barrel threads are metric. Getting a replacement is more difficult. They are also, apparently a real bugger to get off.
